\ FUTURES
NEW YORK.—Tuesday’s reactions
were followed by sharp rallies in the
cotton market at th e opening Wednes.
day morning. Liverpool showed re
newed firmness and reported a con
tinued active spot demand with in
vestment buying of futures. The loca.
market opened firm at an advano« 01
13 lo 18 points in consequence. There
was Liverpool »nd local buying on the
advance which carried October up to
13.05, and December to 13.44. This
met some scattered Southern hedge
selling and renewed realizing which
caused some Irregularity right after
the call, while there was probably
some selling on expectations of a fa
vorable weekly report on crop condi
tions in Eastern bolt sections.

on reactions of 5 or 6 points and the
market showed renewed firmness dur

to the closing strength of Liverpool
and scattering commission house de
mand. October contracts sold up to
13.09 or 24 points net higher and with
in 9 points of Monday's level. Later
realizing beoamea little more active
and the market was quiet with prices
some 9 or 10 points off from the best

of the weather bureau was considered
about a stand off. failing to stimulate

NEW ORLEANS.—Continued favor
able spot accounts and a better Liver

22 points In the price of cotton here
during the first hour of business Wed
nesday. October rose to 12.58. Sales
of 10,000 bales c-r. the spot In the
English market and telegrams from
Waco, Texas, that here were more
buyers than sellers In that spot mar

October 12.41
December 12.71
January 12.80
March, steady 12.97
In the late trading the market de
veloped much activity and a lirmer
tone on rumors that big shorts were
covering in the contract department,
and on telegrams from Galveston re
porting a strong demand for spots on
the part of exporters. The more ac
tive months rose to new high levels
for the session, 28 to 32 points over
the close of yesterday. October
touched 12.66.
The weekly crop reports from the
government were rather more favor
able than expected, not confirming
private bureau reports of decided crop
deterioration. They were followed by
the general selling and at 11 o’clock
prices of the more active months were
2 points higher to 2 points lower than
the close | yostorday with October
off to 12.36.

Shorts Stubbornly Opposed the
Advance in Puces of Stocks,
Bui the Close Was Higher
All Foreign Exchanges Were Stronger—Bonds Were Loss
Active and Trading Was More Restricted
NEW YORK.—Successive periods of
strength, irregularity and steadiness
marked Tuesday’s desultory and pro
fessional operations in the stock mar
ket. Total sales of about three hun
dred and fifty thousand shares ap
proximated the smallest dealings of
the year
The higher level of prices at the
outset was directly due to President
Harding’s condemnation of the pro
posed tariff on oil Imports. Foreign
oils, particularly Mexican and Pan-
American Petroleum and General As
phalt rose 2 to nearly 5 points.
Such diversified issues as stools,
equipments, shippings, textiles, tobac
cos. leathers and chemicals, most of
which are lending at premiums be
cause of the small flotation supply
also made extreme gains of 1 to 3
points
Shorts stubbornly opposed the ad

Professionals In Control
of Wednesday’s Market

WALL STREET. NEW YORK.
Wednesday’s stock market was pretty
much a repetition of that of Tuesday.
Again the volume of business whs
small, with professional trailers com
pletely In possession of the field. This
element was Inclined to work for lower
prices and continued the experiments
at offering down stocks which seemed
to be vulnerable to such operation.
Shares of the electric companies wen
among those attached, chiefly bemuse
they had heretofore been compara
tively exempt.
Steel Rtooks were sold on the report
of the Lackawanna comp my for the
second quarter of 1921. which was as
sumed to be fairly typical of the re
sults for most of the steel concerns.
The railway list was under pressure
because these an* the only stocks
which the public has been buying at
all, and In which, therefore, a sensi
tive speculative account was Indicated,
The selling movement was not at all
heavy, nor was it Important. Call
money again renewed at 6 per cent
but It was well understood that this
was due to the large government with
drawals at the close of the week, and
was consequently only a temporary
hardening. Had there been any eg
pectation that the higher rates would
last, It would have shown in the time
loan market. As it was, borrowers on
time contracts continued to refuse
6H per cent offered by lenders and to
hold out for 6 per cent.
The principal foreign exchanges lost
part of Tuesday’s gain, but later re.
covered. Rusiness was evidently re
stricted by the conflicting accounts of
the recent operation of the German
reiehbank, and how far they have gone
to provide the remainder of the billion
gold marks due by August 31.
The statement that a loan for 150.-
nnn.noo marks had been arranged In
Holland was, of course, accepted; but
further and less definite statements
that other loans had been negotiated
sufficient to cover the rest of th in
demnity payment, were received with

German marks held Tuesday’s sharp

the other hand, the fact that the rise

showed that there was still much

How entirely inconsequential was
