Family Physician Is Doomed To Go
iv - v. : t
UPPER—A HOSPITAL WARD OK 1877. CENTER—E. S. GIL
MORE. PRESIDENT OF THE AM ERIC AN" HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION.
RELOW—HOSPITAL ROOM OP TODAY.
CHICAGO. 111.—Farewell, beloved
family doctor.
That community benefactor who
received most of the population into
the world, watched over its childhood
colics and measles, rescued its health
from excesses and epidemics and will
ease it sympathetically into its grave,
is going to be institutionalized.
This is the outlook from National
Hospital Day, 1924, by E. S. Gilmore,
superintendent of the Wesley Memo
rial Hospital here and president-elect
of the American Hospital Associa
tion.
“The day Is surely coming.’* he
says, “when sick people will not call
the doctor when they get sick, but
will go to a hospital.
“There a man experienced In gen
eral diagnosis will examine them and
assign to them a member of the start
who specializes in their ailment. The
state will operate more hospitals
than at present, but both public and
private institutions will be managed
on this plan.
They'll Be Skyscrapers.
“Such a change will substitute ef~
* flciency for sentiment, but it will not
de-humanize medical treatment. Hos
pitals, on the contrary, will be much
more humanized than at present.
Fifty years ago or less, hospitals
were simply boarding houses for
sick people. Today they are hotels.
Rut in the future, the tendency will
be to give them the personal touch of
homes.’’
Modern hospitals have been de
veloped almost entirely in the last #0
years. The New York Hospital,
opened 47 years ago, excited admir
ing comment because it had bell wires
and speaking tubes all over the build
ing, elevators running from basement
lo roof and “non-absorbents” in walls
and floors. It was thought ordinary
walls would harbor poisons which
spread diseases in hospitals.
But the advance in the next half
century will be far greater than dur
ing the one just past, according to
Superintendent Gilmore. It will in
clude greater laboratory facilities for
diagnosis and research; development
of hydro-, electro, and physio, thera
pies; extension of medical study to
bring it again on an equality with
surgery, and improvement of nursing
schools.
“Hospitals of the future will be
skvseraper buildings, whether in city
or* country,” predicts Superintendent
Gilmore. “If ground is cheap and
plentiful, it is better to use it for
lawns and parks for patients than to
cover it with wide, flat buildings.
Wards Will Go.
“The averago time spent by pa
tients in hospitals will be reduced.
During the last 25 years, the aver
ago time per patient has been out

CROP CONDITIONS IN
GEORGIA, CAROLINA
Synopsis of Weather and Crop Con
ditions in Georgia for the Week
Ending Tuesday, May 20, 1924:
ATLANTA, Ga.—The first half of
the past week was decidedly unfav
orable for the growth of crops over
most of Georgia except the extreme
southern and southeastern portions.
There were frequent and rather un
necessary showers and the nights
were decidedly cold and very unfav
orable for the germination of seeds
and for the growth of vegetation. For
tunately warmer, dry, and more fav
orable weather, began Sunday. Up
to the time of writing this report,
however, improvement had hardly yet
begun. Planting cotton is practically
Unished, hut so much young cotton
was killed by the cool nights that
considerable replanting is necessary
in the central-northern portions. Ger
irdantion and growth of cotton was
very poor during the early part of the
week, but better in the south where
good progress was made, and there
are many fields with cotton having
eight leaves or more. Cropping made
fair progress in the central-northern
portion. The crop in generally fairly
well cultivated, but lice are numerous
in several counties. Corn also made
but slow growth, and there is much
complaitn of damage by bud worms.
Much corn has still to be planted.
Transplanting tobacco is over, with
the crop in good to excellent condi
tion. Transplanting tobacco is over,

tatoes is progressing slowly. Minor
crops are fair, but made little growth.
Pastures are good. Spring oats are
good, but cool weather is delaying
ripening of winter oats and wheat.
White potatoes are good, but potato
bugs are very numerous. The peach
crop remains promising, and May
flowers will be ready for shipment
probably the last week of May.
Synopsis of Weather and Crop Con
ditions in South Carolina for the
Week Ending May 20, 1924:
COLUMBIA. S. C.—Although the
early week rains were generally bene
ficial, the cloudy weather and persis
tently cool nights were unfavorable
for satisfactory growth of cotton and
corn; the stands are irregular in
many sections, and considerable re
planting has been necessary; planting
continues, and cotton chopping has
become general. Outdoor work has I
made fair progress. Truck, gardens j
sweet and white potatoes, tobacco,
peanuts and pastures are improved. |
The sugar pea harvest is practically
finished and some white potato har
vesting .results are very good; large
quantities of cabbage have been har
vested; cucumbers show a rather poor
stand. Rice planting in small patches
is practicully completed. Small grains
are now about ready to harvest,' and
the condition is fair to good, except
poor winter cats. Sweet potato trans
planting continues. Tree fruits and
blackberries continue in good opera
tion. Native strawberries of line
quality are on market in large quan
tities. Cut worms are reported as
rather bad in some sections.
FACES SPITTER
FOR FIRST TIME,,
MAKES BASE HIT
NEW YORK.—Earl Combs, high
priced Yankee recruit, made his Am
erican League debut the other day
as pinch hitter. He hit safely.
Combs made his first big league
base hit under unusual conditions. It
was delivered at the expense of Jack
Quinn, veteran spitter of the Boston
Red Sox.
Incidentally it was the first time
Combs ever batted against the spitball
delivery. However, the spitball ap
parently bothers him no more than
the fast one or curve.
Combs has played professionally
only two years, both In the Ameri
can Association. The spitball deliv
ery is not permitted in that organ
ization.
BUYING TO SELLING
Oregon has been converted from
buyer to seller of eggs. A few years
ago the state imported poultry and
eggs by the carload. A year ago, it
is estimated, she shipped 100 oars of
eggs alone to outside markets.

You Can Buy Evaparated Milk Direct
From Farmers Who Produce It
Probably there is no news appear
ing in the daily papers. of greater in-1
terest to the housewife and mother |
than that contained In the advertis
ing issued by the Dairyman's League ‘
Association regarding
their Dairylea Evaporated Milk.
For .through this advertising, the
housewife and mother learn that now,
for the first time, she can buy evapo
rated milk directly from the farmers
who produce it.
As every mother realises, the most
important of foods is milk—it is the
first food we eat upon entering this
world, and It Is considered the most
important food of our diet throughout
our lives.
And, because so many people, espe
cially mothers, are Interested in milk,
they naturally are Interested In the
argest farmer organisation of its
kind In the world, producing milk and
selling milk direct to the consumer.
It is amazing to most people, to
learn that every single can of Dairy
lea Evaporated Milk, sold in America,
has the combined guarantee of every
member of the famous Dairyman’s
League Co-operative Association and
the membership of this association
consists of 70,000 responsible and pro
gressive farmers, who not only pro
duce milk, but manage every detail
In the execution of its immense busi
ness
The annual business done by the
Dairyman's league Co-operative As
sociation amounts to over seven mil
lion dollars monthly—nearly ninety
million dollars ev/ry year.
Another fact that Is a source of

these 70,000 farmers own one million
cows. To give you an Idea of Just
what it means to own a million
cows, imagine a procession of these
cows passing your home, one after
the other, a line of them, stretch
ing from New York to New Orleans,
or from Holton to Dallas, Texas. It.
is a distance of about 1,600 miles. If
these cows passed you at the rate of
but one per minute, you would sit
watching them for 16,666 hours, or
for 1,380 days, or for nearly four
years.
Every one of these million cows Is
owned entirely by the members of
the Dairymen's League Co-operative
Association, and many of these cows
are Blue Ribbon winners, producing
the finest milk In the world. In fact,
\J. K, Senator Copeland, when Health
Commissioner of New York City, said
that the New York City supply of
milk, the milk as supplied by the
Dairymen’s League Co-operative As
sociation, is: "The Rest in the
World."
All those are interesting facts; but
far more In te/ eating to the housewife
and mother are the high commercial
gleals which govern the activities of
this league.
For Instance: These 70,000 farm
ers, realizing that public health will
be benefited when the public con
sumers more milk, insist on giving,
iri Dairylea Evaporated Milk, a bet
ter quality and an added food value
so that you will want to eat more
milk.
And as you may know, the U. H.
government has set very high milk
standards. but these responsible
farmers have gon even shove these
standards In producing Dairylea Eva
opraied Milk. That, is why Dairylea
contains mors nutritious fats and
solids than even your own govern
ment requires; and with their desire

All of the above facts are pointed
