NEW YORK COTTON
NEW YORK.—A sharp setback oc
curred in the cotton market early
Friday as a result of improved
weather in the belts, weaker cables
and n continued slow demand for
goods us reflected in sales of only
10,000 to 15,000 piece* at. Fall River
for the week. First prices were 17
to 28 points lower. May dropped as
low as 31.76 w hile July reached 28.90, ,
October 25.77.
There was liberal selling by Liver- ,
pool, the South and New Orleans but
on the decline Wall street interests
bought a good deal of cotton and I
showed considerable bullish interest ,
In the market. A local house issued
r crop report muklng conditions 67.0 j
with an Increase of 4.5 per cent in
acreage. The report was consider- ]
ed ns bullish, forecasting a rather
low government figure on Juno 2. |
Subsequently May contracts de
clined to 31.64, the notices having I
been increased but at midday a re
newal of Wall street buying carried
the May delivery to 32.15, or 18 points
over the previous close, later months
showing net advances of 12 to 17
points in sympathy. Hentlment seem*
ed to be impressed with the fact that
the crop was backward nnd commis
sion houses reported good buying on
The market quieted down some
what In the afternoon when prices
ruled about ten points net higher on
July and unchanged to seven points
net lower on new' crop positions.
Trading in May contracts ceased at
noon with a «Me at 31.98 or 275
points premium over July. Wall street
and commission houses continued to
buy on recessions,
all declines.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON
NEW ORLEANS.—Poor Liverpool »
cables and issue of May notices in !
New York for 0,800 hales caused the
cotton market to open lower. Only
500 bales of notices issued here. The j
first trade in May was nt 50.85 or 32 i
points below the previous close. Later j
months showed first trades only eight
to ten points net lower, but Continued ,
to ease off after the start until July
traded at ’28.88 and October at 25.00, j
or 22 and 15 points down from the |
previous close. New crop months
were Nuppniinl by expectation of bull
ish condition report by a. well known
New York house promised for later
in the morning.
The market continued to caHc off
slowly toward the end of the first
hour of trading on a rather good
weather map. July trading down to
2.8.75 and October to 25.03. or 35 und
17 points respectively under the pre
vious close. tfmall sales for the week
»t Fall River, ten to 16,000 pieces,
helped the easier tone. Later in the
forenoon the market rallied well on
a forecast for Unapt tied, showery mid
colder weather ana on a low condition
average of 67 by a New York author
ity and an average of 60.4 by a local
firm. July advanced to 29.30 and Oc
tober to 25.35 or 55 and 32 points re
spectively up from the early low.
The market fluctuated within nar
row limits in the hour before noon
and in the early afternoon prices
keeping well within the earlier range,
supported nt first the unfavorable
weather forecast and the low private |
conldtion estimates and easing off ,
Inter on week-end evening up and on
n rumor of dlaagrcement over tho tax
measure between the President and
Secretary Mellon. May In New York
went out at noon at ."#.98 showing a
premium of 283 points over July !n
that market. Hpota here are very
stiff nnd at the highest basis of the
season.

MARKET UNCHANGED
Spot Cotton at Augusta
Quoted at 30.38
By W. A. LUFBURROW
Market Editor.
Cotton marked time Friday and on
the close of the market spot cotton at
Augusta was quoted at 30.38, which la
unchanced from previous closing. A
break on the bear side is due and
fully expected. This will doubtless
lie realized with clcarlnc weather.
The market looks apeculatlve for
some time yet.
The cotton situation as viewed by
Theo. II .l’rlce. In Commerce and Fi
nance, this week Is:
"The census figures of cotton con
sumption In the United States during
ihe month of April are really sur
prising when the short time and cur
tailment that have been reported are
considered. The reduction for the
entire country Is only 17 per cent The
decrease In the South, where 66 per
cent of the cotton used Is now con
sumed, Is hut 10 per cent, while the
reduction In the consumption else
whero averages about. £3 per cent,
which Is much less than the trade had
anticipated.
"The export* are also above expec
tations. The result Is that all hut
93.000 hales of this year's crop plus
the 'carryover' estimated by the
census was 'ln sight’ on April 30.
"It Is therefore probable that the
distribution will again exceed the as
certained supply by a substantial
amount. If not the stocks at the
mills nnd In warehouse will be re
duced to the vanishing point, for on
the face of thn figures thero remains
In tho United States but 2.798.000
hales for consumption nnd export dur
(r.f title three months ending July 31.
"Facing such exhaustion the crop
outlook becomes Increasingly Impor
tant. The first report of the Agri
cultural Department will he Issued on
Juno C. Speculation Is already busy
guessing at what It will he. If the
condition Is lower than Inst year's
figure of 71 the effeot may he sensa
tional.
"The temperatures In the South last
week were rather below normnl at
thla time of the year and thn crop Is
generally described as somewhat
backward. It Is. however, too early
to dogmatize about Its size for a few
dnys of warmth and sunshine can
work wonders In the spring time, we
must therefore wait, hut while we
wait the little cotton that la left Is
being taken with amazing rapidity.
Last week spinner*' takings of Am
erican cotton were 194,000 halos as
compared with 1f,1,000 last year nnd
exports were 34,000 hales agalnat only
25,000 hales In 1923.
"A somewhat better tone Is mean
time apparent in the dry goods mar
ket ami some merchant* who are
rinse observers snd careful students
are confident of a more active de
mand In the near futuro. In Worth
t Street a large attendance of our of
J town buyer* la expected during the
Democratic convention which con
venes In New York on June 24. and It
may he that we ahull then see a re
vival of activity.
"The future* market Is meantime
steady to firm with an upward tend
ency It aeeins to lie entirely im
mune from the psychological depres
sion that Is noticeable In some other
directions, nnd until It becomes spec
ulatively overbought or the weight of
the new crop commences to be tell
there Is no visible reason why »
should decline.”
