last meeting, held recently, appointed
a commitee of its members to inves
tigate and report back on a possible
site or sites for the local of such an
experiment station. For some years
past experiment stations have been
maintained by Clemson College at the
college for the Piedmont, at Florence
for the Pee Dee and at Summerville
for the coastal sections of the state.
Experiments with reference to soils,
plants and animals have been con
ducted until now there is a mass of
reliable data applicable to the above
named sections.
Nothing has been done with refer
ence to agricultural development in
an experimental way in the Sand Hill
section. Here and there farmers have
best to ask for it by its full name
for the success of this preparation

begun the planting of fruits, berries
and truck crops with a fairly satis
factory degree of success. It is now
proposed to establish somewhere in
the Sand Hill section of the state an
experiment station which will work
out some of the problems facing the
farmers of thi ssection. To this end
a committee has been appointed, as
been stated, and this committee will
have the selection of a site to make.
CAN OFFER MANY
ADVANTAGES.
Aiken county has every possible ad
vantage to offer and to recommend it
as a suable site for the new sta
tion. Soil types are as typical as
any to be found in the Sand Belt, run
ning from Georgia through South
Carolina into North Carolina. Land is
both level and rolling in this county,
affording space suitable for any type
of experiment. Climate is not to
be questioned. Location is accessible.
In short, Aiken can compete favorably
with any place now being considered.
Camp Jackson, near Columbia, is un
der consideration, it is understood.
Advantages to the farmers of this
section and the business men of Aiken
county are too numerous to mention.
Federal and state funds would be
available for the employment of a
staff of men to conduct these experi
ments. A hundred nr more people
would be given steady employment
at the station. Visitors from every
section of the Sand Belt would come
here to study the experiments. It is
said that more than 20.000 people
visited the Florence station last year
just to study the experiments in wee
vil control. In addition, the farmers
hereabouts would have right at their
doors a source of agricultural infor
mation which would prove invaluable.
The proposition of wp pew experi
ment station was the subject of dis
cussion at the regular monthly meet
ing of the Aiken Agricultural Club,
held Wednesday. Resolutions were
adopted askin gthat Aiken be given
consideration ns the location for the
station, and P. M% George was ap
pointed a committee of one from the
club to co-operate with other com
mittees to be appointed from the vari
ous civic organizations to confer with
the Glemson Gollege committee.
Thursday at the weeklv luncheon of
the Kiwanians the matter was up for
discussion.
AIKEN MAYOR
Sets Aside Playground For
Children
AIKEN, S. C— Mayor Gaston has
set aside as a playground, between
the hours of 7 and 10 o'clock each
evening for the remainder of the
summer, half the paved block at
the opper erfd of Dark Avenue—
that is from The Standard office
to the residence of Dr. Hastings
Wyman, Jr., on the corner opposite
the Highland Park Hotel. This
half block is roped off at 7 o'clock,
and the pavement used as a skat
ing rink after that hour. The idea
is already proving a popular one.
AIKEN, S. C.—lt is announced
that the corner-stone of the new
colored school building, for whicli
$25,000 in bonds were voted by the
people of Aiken last year, will be
laid .Sunday afternoon, August 17,
at 5 o'clock with ex
ercises, the public being invite'd to
attend. The school building will
be ready for use early in the fall.
AIKEN, S. C.—A meeting of the
executive board of the South Car
olina League of Women Voters was
held in Aiken, at the home of Mrs.
Julia B. Salley, Wednesday, sev
eral attending from Columbia, and
Mr*. W. L. Dunnovant of Edge
field, the president of the organi
zation, being present. Satisfaction
was expressed at the large num
ber of women enrolled throughout
the state.
AIKEN, S. C.—Sunday Col. I. W.
Fowler underwent an operation,
his leg being amputated in the
hope of arresting the trouble with
which he has been suffering and
with which he has been critically
ill at his home. Col. Fowler’s many
friends join with the family in
hoping for a successful operation. l
Reports from his bedside Friday
are that he is not so well. His son,
Edward Fowler came on from
lowa to be With him.
