NEW YORK COTTON
NEW YORK.—The cotton market
opened firm at an advance of 22 to 23
points on relatively steady Liverpool
cables continued optimism over the
European outlook, and disappoint
ment over the failure of early reports
to show more rain in the southwest.
Monday's sellers were among the
buyers on the advance which carried
prices up to 27.75 for October and
27.2(1 for December, or 35 points to
40 points above Monday's closing quo
tation during the early trading. The
advance was cheeked by realizing nnd
some southern selling presumably in
the way of hedging but prices held
within five or ten points of best in a
fairly Motive market.
Lack of any immediate prospects
for n break in the Texas drought later
stimulated additional covering. Near
months gained about 20 points, but
there was enough profit-taking to
supply buyers at these figures, and
trading became quieter. Prices held
generally steady, however, and wore
within ten or 12 points of the bos*
'during the noon hour.
NEW ' ORLEANS COTTON
NEW ORLEANS. —The cotton mar
ket opened higher owing to continued
absence of rain in Texas. First trades
showed gains of 11 to 19 points and
the market continued to improve dur
ing the call and afterwards until Oc
tober traded as high as 26.99, De
cember at 26.9 S and March at 27.05 or
28 to 34 points above Monday’s clos
ing levels. Temperatures In Texas
were reported high and plants shed
ding badly. Good rains were report
ed in parts of North Louisiana whore
they have been badly needed hut all
attention for the moment is center
ed on Texas. Liverpool cables were
about as due when American mar
kets opened.
Following the early advance, the
market reacted slightly, but soon
turned firm again on the showing of
no rains in the west by the weather
map and the upward swing gained im
petus from an official forecast for
generally fair weather In the western
half #>f the belt. New York report
ed that big western operators were
buying with a view to forcing shorts
to cover October advanced to 27.19
and December to 27.25 or 45 to 49
points up from the early low and CO
to 61 points above the previous close.
The market appeared quite steady
at mid-session at the highest levels
no far reached. The weather report
showed no rain In the west belt ex
cept in eastern Arkansas and In
i\prth Louisiana.

MARKET ADVANCED
Spot Cotton at Augusta
Quoted at 29.38
By W. A. LUFBURROW
Market Editor.
There was a sharp advance In the
cotton market Tuesday and on the
close spot cotton at Augusta tvas
quoted at 29.38. an advance of 94
points over previous closing quota
tions. Western buying and n effort
to catch shorts "napping." and a big
weak short interest with continued
drought In Texas were probably some
of the factors In bringing about the
shake-up. Further advances are pre
dicted for the near future. That Is
very speculative.
To sav th* least, It stands to rea
son that textile Interest will get busy
within the next six or eight, weeks.
The usual summer slump will have
about passed out for the year and
harvest time forecasts a profitable
period. With this will necessarily
come a demand from the consumer.
Conslderahle attention Is being paid
to the European situation at this
time and should the Dawes plan be
accepted bv the powers Interested
bsloness will doubtless be stimulate*.
The textile Interest are vitally con
cerned over the ultimate outcome.
Movement of American cotton will, to
a great extent be governed by ad
justment of the financial condition of
European countries. Europe has been
in past years our greatest consumer.
That this condition should again exist
In a normal way money must be had
or a means whereby trading can be
carried on.

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
CHICAGO. Ill—Wheat took a de
rided upward awing in price early
Tuesday. Influenced by strength of
Liverpool quotations and by a bullish
construction placed on the Canadian
government crop reports. The open
ing which ranged from one cent to
2%0 higher was followed by a mod
erate sag from initial top figures and
then by a fresh upturn.
Cool temperatures tended to lift the
corn market. After opening V4c to
higher prices continued to ascend.
Oats like wheat responded to bull
ish prospects of the Canadian crop
report Starting quarter to %c up
the market held near tb the opening
gain.
Low quotations nn hogs weakened
the provision market.
