RICHARDSON HOME
ON THE HILL WAS
BURNED THURSDAY
The Augusta home of Harold A.
Richardson, of New York, at 2131
Gardner Street, was practically to
tally destroyed by fire early Thurs
day morning. The call came in at
about 2:30, according to firemen,
and the cause is unknown. After
battling with the stubborn flames
for some minutes the firemen final
ly conquered them end the fire was
put out, with an estimated damage
of $7,000 to the house and contents
reported.
Mr. Richardson and his family
were not in the house at the time,
being on tlie way here from New
York. They were expected to ar
rive sometime Thursday.
The cause of the tire is unknown.
D. F, HOOTON DIES
Was Prominent Banker of
Bamberg, S. C.
BAM HERO, 8. C.—D. F. Hooton.
73, prominent banker and leading
citizen of this place, died at the res
idence Tuesday niglit, 10: IK o’clock,
following lyi illness oT several
months. Funeral services and In
terment were conducted Wednesday
afternoon at the Restland cemetery.
I>r. .1. Walter Daniel, pastor of
Trinity Methodist church, officiat
ing, assisted by Rev. O. J. *Falls, of
the Baptist church. The funeral
was largely attended and the flo
ral tributes were many and hand
some. Surviving Mr. Hooton are
his wodow, Mrs. Cornelia Hooton:
ids daughter, Miss Natalie Hooton,
and Emory A. Hooton, of Bamberg;
Mrs. E. V. Camp, of Bartow, Fla.,
and Mrs. W. H. Zeigler, of Cope, S.
C„ children of a former marriage.
Mr. Hooton was prominent in tlie
financial circles of Bamberg, hav
ing been for 35 years identified with
the Bamberg Banking Company,
and up to a short time before his
failing health compelled him to re
sign his position, president of the
bank.
Mr. Hooton was born near Wil
llston, in Barnwell county, of this
state. When quite a boy he re
moved to Alabama, where he lived
several years before returning to
Ids home state in 1873. He was ap
pointed postmaster for Hamberg
under the Cleveland administration
in 1884, and served in this capacity
until 1888, declining reappointment
under a republican administration.
In 1888 he entered the employ of
tlie Bamberg Banking Company as
a clerk and served in varying ca
pacity with this institution until
he reached the presidency, two
years ago, which position he occu
pied up to January 1 of the present
year. He watt a member of the
Trinity Methodist church, and serv
ed the church as a. trustee for a
long number of years. He also was
a. member of Bamberg Lodge No.
38, Knights of Pythias, and of Or
nan Lodge, A. F. M. For more than
20 years ho served ns a member of
(lie Board of Trustees, Bamberg
schools, district No. 14, remaining a
member of this body until the com
pletion of the new school building
at which (Ime he retired. He was
a thorough Christian gentleman
nnd served his community In a long
and honorable career. Courteous,
kindly and considerate, he num
bered his friends by the score, and
he will be woefully missed in the
various activites of Bamberg.
RAWLS TO APPEAL

Carlden’s Injuries were *ald to be
confined to his hnnds, nnd while
very painful, are not serious. The
car was damaged to the extent of
only one dollar, according to esti
mates of firemen. A hurry call to
Engine House number 4 brought
the apparatus quickly to the scene
and the flee was extinguished In a
abort time.
Cadden's car wn* parked In front
of Gay's store ot Eve and Broad
streets at the time, and It Is under
stood that the gasoline was being
poured In the ear and the lantern
being used ns a light near the gaso
line. Cadden's corn was Ignited
and was pulled off of him by peo
ple standing nea,r.

AUGUSTA CITIZENS
Will Urge Change in Georgia
R. R. Schedule
While In conference here Wed
nesday with officials of the Board
of Commerce, J. P. Billups, general
passenger agent of the Georgia
Hallroad stated that the Chicago
sleeper out of Augusta will go on
November I.6th. Mr. Bllllps hopes
that the service will be an all-year
around one. The sleeper will leave
here on train No. 3 at 2:15 a. m.
and return on No. 4 ot 2:15 a. m..
making connections with the Dixie
Flyer! in Atlanta and Chicago.
The proposed change in the sche
dule of one of the passenger trains
on the Macon branch was aslso dis
cussed, and tl was decided that a
large delegation of citizens from
here will appear before th# Georgia
Public Utilities Commission In At
lanta. September 22nd to ask that
the chunge In the schedule be
granted. When the change Is made
the passenger train which now
leaves Macon at 6:45 a. m. will
leave at *:45 a. m. It Is under
stood that the change will meat
with the support of the traveling
public.
