DANGEROUS PRACTICAL
JOKES
The Richmond. (Va.; News-Len
der is offering S2OO reward for the
person who recently sent, in, as a
legitimate news item, information
as to the alleged death of a young
lady of that city. The News-Lea
der explains:
"As a paper would be guilty of
the worst inconsideration 4f it de
clined to accept items of this sort,
or if it attempted to crossexaminc
a member of a bereaved family, the
News-Leader of course accepted
the item." The informant of the
News-Leader apparently meant to
play a joke upon a young woman
of Richmond, who as it turns out,
was not dead, nor in bad health.
But the joke may yet be turned
against the author of the hoax, if
he c;ut be identified. It is unlaw
ful to give false information of this
charactor to a newspaper, and vio
lation of the statute carries an
adequate penalty.
In this connection the Columbus
Ledger says:
Three marriage announcements
reaching The Ledger office in the
past ten days, found their way to
the waste basket due to the vigil
ance of a special reporter, who is
endeavoring to locate those respon
sible for writing or phoning in this
false information.
Persons with a perverted sense
of humor should understand that
newspapers are not without re
course when they are victimized
and made the instrument by which
embarrassment is caused innocent
people.
The Ledger proposes to vigorous
ly prosecute anyone caught who
may he connected with sending in
such false news matter.
Newspapers generally try to ex
ercise the utmost vilgilance, but as
the Richmond News-Leader sug
gests, it sometimes seems like an
impertinence to cross-question a
bereaved family, and mischief
maker* get In their work.
It should be more generally
known that this is a serious matter
and we hope our contemporaries
in Richmond and Columbus bring
the guilty to punishment.
