Modern Elevators
Make Skyscrapers
Possible
The modern elevator Is a di
rect evolution from the ma
chine which Elisha G. Otis ex
hibited in 1853 at the World's
Fair in the Crystal Palace,
New York. During the next
five years a number of ma
chines were built similar to
that exhibited, all being driven
from line shafting.
The skyscraper requirements
could not be met by the old ele
vator #rt. Thus in 1903 a new
type of electric elevator was
developed. It is quite evident
that the high state of develop
ment of the electric elevator
today could not have been ac
complished without improve
ment in the design of electric
motors.
Would you like to climb 114
flights of stairs to get on top
of the highest building in the
world? Just as important to
the thousands of people who
use elevators is the Want Ad
Section of the Augusta Herald.
Watch this section of the pa
per for investments, bargains
and business opportunities.
