HOTEL INSPECTOR
Sows a Bean and Reaps
a Zinn Beck Bat
COLUMBIA, S. V.—Attracted by
an advertisement of a unique plan
called the wonder bean, J. H.
Woodward, hotel Inspector of South
Carolina, put in an order for a
package of seed. The seed arrived,
were put in the ground in Mr.
Woodward’s Collego street garden
and the hotel inspector waited de
velopments.
Then one day a vine began to
spread itself along the surface t of
the earth and to bear fruit. But to
tho dismay of Mr. Woodward, ha
found a most peculiar product
giowing on the branches of the
plant. It grew and grew, and as it

Pa Gets the Bug Every Year About This Time
reached maturity began to put on a
singular shape. Instead of a bean
the hotel inspector discovered that
he had raised something resembling
a squash.
The “wonder bean” was shaped
very mijch like a baseball bat —
large at the top and very small at
the bottom. After reaching Ls full
growth it measured about three
feet.
Mr. Woodward was somewhat
leary about utilizing his “find’’ as
a means of punishing hunger. He had
ordered a bean and had grown a
baseball bat!
The vine produced a half dozen
“bats,” Finally one day the owner of
the College street garden ordered the
cook to prepare one of the "things”
for dinner. This was done and to
the delight of Mr. Woodward the
fruit was palatable. “It tasted very
much like an egg plant,” he said.-
The hotel inspector brought one
of the “wonder beans” to his office
in the Palmetto building. He is sav
ing it for seed. Like a gourd it has
hardened. If Goose Goslin gets In
the world series Mr. Woodward
might accidentally slip him the bat
shaped object and instruct the for
mer Columbian outfielder to p'ant
one of Nehf’s offerings over the
right field fence.
Dazzled By Hollywood
Beauties, Hiking Vet
Sticks to Ga. Peaches
ATLANTA, Ga.—Uncle George
Sheram, the hiking Confederate
veteran, is back from Hollywood
and the Golden West with stories
of how he was offered a movie con
tract. pe saw so rtiany pretty girls
that he was almost dazzled, hut
still thinks that Georgia girls are
the prettiest in the world.
"I just got homesick for Geor
gia and her old led hills,” he said
Friday afternoon, when he showed
up at The Journal office. "That’s
a pretty country out there and I
had lots of fun.”
NO JOB THERE
Uncle George said he put in his
application for a job in Hollywood,
but there was nothing open on that
day.
“I hung around for several days,
and then they offered me a con
tract to go to South Africa this
fall and appear in a picture to be
made there,” he "said. ”But I
couldn't stay away from Georgia
that long.”
He told of a thrilling fifteen hun
dred milo through the western
states, en route home. It took six
days and enabled him to speed up
his arrival in^ Georgia.
"But I'd rather walk than make
such time; it nearly put me out of
commission,” he interjected.
FAMED
Uncle G’borge has gained nation
wide fame by hiking to several
Confederate reunions and only
abandoned the practice upon the
occasion of the last one in Mem
phis. He set out immediately after
wards lor the west, and probably
will go to Florida this winter.
Traveling means little to this
veteran of eighty-five years.
