ADVENTURES
Of the TWINS
By Olive Roberts Barton
••WHAT’S THE MATTER?” WHY DON'T YOU MAKE SOME MUSIC’”
ASKED NANCY.
The Twins rode along on the black
night-marc behind Snuggle, the
Dream Han’s second son. They were
looking (or the gnrme who stole the
sleepy sar.d.
"Venus is a queer place. Queerer
n Mars," said Nick to Nancy.
"Hey, what's that?” asked an old
man who happened to be passing.
What did you say? My nose isn't
going so I can’t hear very well out
of my eyes.”
"I said that everything was
strange,” said Nick.
"I see what you mean. I see what
you mean exactly,” said the old man.
“And you are entirely right. X al
ways said that fried cakes were a bad
thing to eat going to bed. If I eat
more than ten. my little toe keeps me
awake all night."
"Oh. goodnessi” whispered Nancy.
"He’s as deaf as a post. We'll have
to ask somebody else. Good-bye, old
man.”
"Yes, I certainly will.” called the
old man after them. "A week next
Sunday.”
People in Venus were getting
breakfast because it was so nearly
bedtime.
Some were sweeping the streets
and brushing the dust into the
houses.
"My, oh my!" cried a woman near
them. ”1 have the most areadful
time! I can’t keep the house dirty to
s ave me. It’s so clean and cleared
up at night that I am perfectly
ashamed of It. 1 do hope these
strangers aren't coming to see me.”
"Did you see a funny little fellow
with a bug over his shoulder?" asked
Nick. "It’s full of sand and we re
after It."
"Robbers'.” cried the woman rais
ing her broom. "Don’t you know
that eand is money In Venus? And
three to one Isn’t fair. If I see him
I’ll keep it for myself.”
Snuggle said, "Glddap,” and the
Mack night-mare galloped away
down the street.
But the Twin* weren't going bavk
to the Moon without having anothed
look. They hated to tell the opor
Sand Man that the sleepy sand was
not to be found.
They passed a bank called "The
Sand Bank." and peeped In the win
dow. There were bushels and bushels
of sand heaped up.
"I'll say some magic words and If
the sleepv sand is there It will jump
out.” said Nick. So h* said, "Iminy
Jimlny." But not a thing happened
"No, It isn't there." he said
They passed a fiddler playing a
BY CONDO
fiddle, but making not a sound.
"What's the matter? Why don't you
make some music?” asked Nancy.
"The most beautiful music is the
music you don’t hear,” said the fid
dler with a queqr look.
“Oh, come on! Tweekanose Isn't
here!” said Nick. "I think Venus Is
too strange for anybody to want to
come to. Everything is backwards.’l
So back to the Moon went Snuggle
and the Twins on the black night
mare.
Clublallub, club-a-lub, rlub-a-lub!
went her hoofs on the Milky Way.
