LOTTA’S CONGESTED WILL
. It i3_a time-worn statement that
there are no pockets in a shroud.
In the nature of things we must
leave the world as empty-handed
as wo entered it. The record of
good (Weds is the only treasure we
can lay up in heaven.
Even the distribution of some
part of our earthly treasure is far
more effective if done while we are
yet living than to incur the uncer
tainty of attempting to distribute it
after we are gone.
A case in point which is attract
ing more than passing attention is
that of the celebrated actress,
Lotta Carbtree. It has been so long
since she trod the boards that she
was hardly remembered except by
the older generation when she died
a few days ago. But slid was
piquant and popular in her day.
She made a great deal of money on
the stage and by wise investments
in real estate her nest egg increased
and multiplied until her fortune
was estimated at $4,000,000.
She was a generous soul, and she
made her will in such a way that
she hoped to benefit mankind when
she had passed away. With the
exception of a few bequests to rela
tives all her fortune was devised to
charitable uses. How skillfully her
will was draw r n we do not know;
perhaps it will be impossible to
break it.
But she had hardly breathed her
last, and tho terms of the will made
known than a host of relatives,
more or less remote, rose up from
all over the country and joined in
an attack upon these charitable
legacies. Most of them apifcirently
did not know she was so wealthy.
Few of them had paid any attention
to her in her declining years. But
so soon as the contents of the will
are made known they gather like
eagles.
There could be no criticsm of her
desire to make ample provision for
those who were nearest to her. But
it was her evident desire to distri
bute her immense wealth for the
benefit of the poor and afflicted.
How great would been her
satisfaction if she had made this
distribution while she was still liv
ing to see how much she was able
to accomplish in the Way of drying
tears of distress. The evidences of
gratitude from the tens of thou
sands whose lot in life she would
have made happier would have
brought her greater pleasure, no
doubt, than she ever experienced in
accumulating her fortune.
As it is she is not only denied this
satisfaction, but it may be that in
genious lawyers may find a flaw in
the wIH and the bequests will not
take the direction intended by the
wealthy actress.
We shhll pass this way but once,
and the greater happiness we can
give to others while we are yet liv
ing is at last about the only thing
worth while.—Macon News.
