The Destreek Skule Club held Its
weekly meeting at the home of Is
hnm Stewart, Sr., and wife on Kol
lock street, Tuesday evening. As
Is always true of this hospitable
home, at the cot\pluslon of the bust
ness hour of the club, tempting re
freshments were served, followed by
games and a general good time.
An Interesting brother sends me
the following pertinent query:
"Some months ago you stated
that the committee on Interracial
co-operation In Atlanta had, in
conjunction with other citizens
there, succeeded in securing a color
ed boys high school at a cost of
several hundred thousand dollars
out of a public school bond Issue.
Later you stated that. a similar
committee had heen organized In
Augusta. Does this committee func
tion? Can you give the names of the
members of the Augusta committee
and tell the public what efforts, if
any, they have made, to ehek the
colored cltlz ns of this city and
county by the Boned of Education
111 the expenditure of several mil
lions of dollars In public school
buildings, not one dollar of which
went to a co’ored school for the
past thirty of more years?" An
swer- There was such a commit
tee formed here many months ago.
I will endeavor to securp and print
the names of the members of the
dugusta committee as requested. To
tills end. I would thank any mem
ber of that committee for the In
formation asked for.
Nurse Jfattle Walker returned

There Is n so-called compulsory
school attendance law In Oeorgih,
but. unfortunately and remarkably,
the law provided that counties
which did not care to enforce it
need not do so. The Richmond
county Board of Education elected
not to enforce the law Insofar as
the negro children of the city and
county are concerned. Augusta will
never make substantial and lasting
progress half educated and half
ignorant.
' The speech of Dr. Anderson as
spokesman for the committee of
colored citizens, which appeared be
fore the Board of Kducation last
Saturday was a conservative but
forceful presentation of the posi
tion of the colored tax payers and
citizens of this city and county.
Conferences between a committee
of the Board of Kducation an da
committee of colored citizen* were
provided for hy the hoard, and I
| think I descr y a rift In the dark
cloud that hus envelloped and dis
couraged the colored people of Au
gusta for forty years. The commit
tee from the board was given power
to act.
Colored citizens who have ex
pressed themselves on the question
are glad Judge Franklin knocked
out the propositon of the city ad
ministration to tax the tax payers
one hundred and thirty thousand
dollars to buy a boat to operate on
the Savannah river between this
city and Savannah.
Teacher Marietta .Tames easily

The funeral of Edward Beaton
took place from Tabernacle church

Monday and Tuesday afternoons
1 and nights witnessed record break
lug crowds on Trinity church
I lawn. The kids were there in the
afternoons and all the ohter folks
were there in the evenings. It was
Indeed a fete, and the committee
which had charge is entitled to the
thanks of the people for the com
plete success of the fete.
Sunday was a great day at
Trinity and marked the greatest
anniversary the church has ever
observed.
