GRAIN PROFITEERS
Of 23 Centuries Ago In

VALOVACII, Asia Minor. ■— The
remains of a massive trluph.il arch
believed to have been constructed
in the early part of the I'lrst cen
tury A. D., Latin Inscriptions of
that century, and a head of Au
gustus In white marble, are among
archaeological finds which have
been unearthed by the University
of Michigan expedition which Is ex
cavating under the direction of
. l’rof. David M. Robinson of Johns
Hopkins University on the silo of
Antioch In Plsldla In Asia Minor.
It was this expedition which re
cently uncovered tho foundations of
a large early Christian church.
The arch, which was recently die
covered, spanned a bond near lW
bases of the large oval hill on which
the city stood. The road probably
connected with tho highway to
Lystnr.
The arch had a single passage
way with a span of about fourteen
feet. Tho piers contained arched
recesses as If for statues. They
were embellished with superimpos
ed pilasters exemplifying two va
rieties of the Corinthian order.
These carried the main entablature,
of which the architecture Imre an
Inscription In bronze letters six
Inches high. Only one of tho let
ters has been found, burled In tho
earth where It fell, but from the
holes In which the letters were
fastened It will be possible to de
cipher the Inscription.
Imporant among other recent
finds Is tho head of Augustus,
which In respect to technical skill
and expressiveness la reported to
rival the best of the remarkable
series of sculptured portraits of this
emperor In Europenn galleries.
Another Interesting discovery is
a long Latin Inscription in which
are recorded tho efforts of Antls
tlus Hustlcus, a Roman governor In
office near tho end of tho first cen
tury to control the price of grain
In time of famine so as to pre-

RAILROADS PROTEST

Riding Friends
ATLANTIC ClTY—Generous mo

fare, ares erlously Injuring electric
railway receipts, James W. Walsh,
secretary of the American Electric

In a statement. Mr. Welsh Is here
to open the association convention
Tuesday.
Ro'serious has tho situation be
come that many companies are re
sorting to advertising In newspa

to means higher fares, if nothing
more serious, he lnslstß.
Advertising now being used to
off-set the "lift” habit stresses
these points: Motorists gain no
thing by giving free rides, and are
responsible for accidents to their
passengers; free motor rides drain
railway receipts and compel cur
tailment or abandonment of ser
vice; curtailed or abondoned serv
ice affects property values first,
and many motor car owners own
property; many persons solicit free
rides solely to save car fare.
"The cold facts are that kind
hearted motor car owners unthink
ingly are helping to drive small
electric railway properties to the
wall by their mis-directed 'gener
osity'. Mr. Welsh continued. "The
association In In contact with vir
tually every electric railway in the
United States and a very large ma
jority of them say groat Inroads
arc being made on their receipts by
the free ride practice.
"Two classes of persons are prey
ing on the motor car owner in this
connection. They are neighbors
who Just 'fall Into the habit' of rid
ing downtown with him, and ths
out-and-out ride panhandler who
waits along the road-side and
openly solicits free rides. The
neighbor problem Is the hardest one
for electric railways and motor
ists to compote with. Motorists
generally, most of whom under
stand the primary economics of
business, admit that they know giv
ing free rides is hurting electric
railways, but they say they dis
like to say 'No' to their neighbors.
Many do refuse rides to the neigh
bors. who hall strangers along ths
roadside."
