THE AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA, GA.
DR. JOSEPH R. SEVIER
RESIGNS PASTORATE
HE’S HELD 14 YEARS
Dr. Joseph R. Sevier stirred a
wave of deep and genuine regret
throughout this entire community
at the morning hour of service
Sunday at the First Presbyterian
church, when ha announced his re
signation from this pastorate which
h e has held for the past fourteen
years, his resignation to take ef
fect January 16th.
Doctor Hevler goea from Augusta
t otake the presidency of the FassU
fern school for girls at Henderson
ville, N. C.
It Is highly probable that there
has never been within this city a
minister who has so endeaed him
self to the people of all walks of
life and of all religious denomina
tions and creeds as has Doctor Se
vier. Coming so Augusta fourteen
years ago from Alexandria. Va., to
accept the pastorate of the First
Presbyterian Church he at once
won his way Into the hearts of the
people, not only of his church, but
of all classes by his easily appro
achable manner and his broad
spirit of friendliness. He has taken
earnest and deep Itncrest In every
movement designed for the ad
vancemnt of Augusta In her every
progressive and uplifting step. He
has been the warm friends of the
sinner, and at the same time an un
relenting foe of sin; in the sick
room where gathering shadows cast
a darkening pall he has visited as
a ministering angel to comfort nnd
make less poignant heart-breaking
bereavement; without thought or
selfishness as to creed he has visit
ed In his home of the lowly with as
warm cordiality of purpose and
helpfulness, as In the places of tho
high and mighty: he has been a
friends to all alike, and worked in
the name of the Master whom ho
served with a loyalty and devotion
that won tho high admiration of
all men.
Into the hearts of the children
Doctor Sevier won his way with an
appeal to childish affections that at
once placed him in the forefront as
thoir friends. He held the confi
dence nnd affection of all who knew
him, and his sincerity was never
doubted. His departure from Au
gusta will leave a void in the com
munity life that will be difficult to
fill; and though regretting to give
him up to another city, Augusta
will wish Doctor Sevier God-speed
wherever his steps may W w
tho proud assurance that his lire in
any community will be an Inspira
tion and an uplift to that Place.
Doctor Sevier’s occupancy of tho
puplt of the First Presbyterian
Church has been marked by pro
gressiveness In every way, his work
among the young people being es
pecially effective. No less an ac
quisition than himself to Augusta s
community life has been the in
teresting family of Doctor Sevier,
nnd Mrs. Sevier and their ' chlldri>n.
John and Virginia, will be parted
with by Augustans with heart-ieii
rf 'Tears of sorrow flowed from

Sunday morning when Doctor > «-
vler read the announcement of his
resignation.

NEW YORK.—Mrs. Fanny Men

volving $5,000,000 she says.
Shortly after her arrival from
Russia, 34 yenrs ago, Mrs. Meti

She cared for three of his children
by a first marriage and as the
years went by six more were added
to the family. Complelled to earn
most of the money for their sup

landlord to allow her to collect the
rents. Sucty was her success in
dealing wltn the tenants that land
lords of adjoining tenements, on the
East Side commissioned her as
their collector and 15 years ago her
clientele grew so large that she
became a realty broker.
