In and Around Augusta
(By A. W. WIMBERLY)
That "Hove is a mighty funny
thing. It catr-haa tho young and the
old,” found illustration in the course
of an old sister who had given
about fifty of her sixty-eight year*
In trying to%?et hitched In tho mat
rimonial garden. She wooed early
and she wooed late. Cupid was al
ways engaged on the other side of
tho garedn. The crafty match
makers were consulted and all the
arts of hoodoolsm were resorted to,
hut with no avail. Feeling that she
had played her last and best card,
perhaps, tho sixty-year-old maid
decided to make a last effort. A
likely feller, a widower loomed up
and the old sister reached for him.
Instead of repuplslng her advances
lie evidently decided to numor her
and at tho same time have some
real sport at her expense. He made
frequent calls and the old woman
took for granted that she was win
ning and thaht she would soon
gather lr. the object of her affec
tions, a thing which she had hoped
for all these years.
The trap had been securely set
this time and tho situation became
more promising than had any pre
vious venture. Finally It dawned
upon the old girl that In this case
as In others she was up against a
rival. This sho would never toler
ate. Hho remonstrated with her
lover and Insisted that his love for ,
her Was being transferred to anoth
er. This he denied, but she would
not believe him. In his visits, ei
ther going or returning, he would
stop at the home of a friend who
had gone to work In a far away
city. The wife and little daughter
were still here. In desperation she
confronted the man with the charge
that this friend’s wife was the mag
net that was playing havoc with '
his affections, drawing them away
from her. Notwithstanding his pro- I
testations she clung to her suspl- i
cions and decided to make a last,
hold stroke to dispose of her sup
posed rival. A bright Idea entered
her brain. If sho could'have tint
follow and tho other woman pulled
and locked up on charges of vio
lating tho city's vice law sho would
at least havo vented her spleen

we will have to investigate and

disappointed one told the officer.
"I’ll let you know what night you
can find him there.” Finally one
night tho officers drew up to the
house that had been reported, the
woman Informant following at some
distance to watch the performance.
The servant knocked on the door.
"Who's that," came front within.
“Special delivery letter.” went hack,
and tho woman promptly opened
the door. Instantly several flash
lights Illumined the interior of the
house. “Where is calling the
name that had been given them.
The woman made strong denials as
the officers passed on toMho other

They disgrace their own people and

I am convinced from expressions
picked up in my rounds among the
colored people that the letter of
Ernest A. Hyons, printed In last
Sunday's Jierald, more nearly rep
resented the position of the color

any other deliverance so far made.
