KEMP GIVES REPORT
TO KIWANIANS ON
ROME CONVENTION
Clerc Kemp, one of the Augusta '
Kiawanis representatives to the
state Kiwnnis convention held at
Rome the early part of this week,
reported on the convention at the
club luncheon Thursday, in sub
stance as follows;
There were seven delegates from
the local organisation to attend the
state convention, the party being
guests of Kiwanian Hugh Purvis,
general manager of the Georgia and :
Florida Railroad, in his private car.
There were 215 delegates from over
the state at the convention and a ;
royal good time was enjoyed by l
everyone. The Rome people were
lavish in their hospitality and en
tertainment and nothing was lack
ing that could add to the pleasure
of the visitors. The keynote ad
dress of the convention was deliv- ,
ered by Attorney Felton Hatcher, I
of Macon, and was a masterly es- 1
fort. The Berry School and Shorter
College were points of interest to
the delegates and a delightful bar- I
iiecue was tendered at the Coosaw
Country Club. A large amount of ,
business waR attended to during ;
(ho convention sessions, notably
among which were the endorse
ments given various welfare hc- |
tivities throughout the state. A re- I
districting of the state clubs places
the Augusta Kiwanis in the East
ern District. The state convention
for 1925 goes to Albany, this city
being largely represented and the
delegates working zealously to this
end. It had been Jioped that the
1925 convention would be brought
to Augusta but the representation
from this city was not strong
enough to land it and Augusta
lost out by a vote of 40 to 31.
A strong appeal was made by Ki
wanian ,T. Frank Carswell for the
club to support the proposed bond
issue in the coming election, and in
as much as the club, as an organi
zation, had already endorsed the
proposed bonds it should be felt the
duty of every Kiwanian to vote fa
vorably for the bonds.
Among the guests at luncheon
Thursday was R. W. Barton, local
manager of the Piggly-Wigglv
stores, who entertained the club
with a splendid recital of Kip
ling's “If.” Other guests at. lunch
eon were: T.. S. Montgomery. Clay
ton B. Berrv and ,T. J. Willingham,
ail of Atlanta, and Sam Saye.
president of the Augusta Rotary
Club.
A rising vote of appreciation was
extended Kiw’anian Hugh Purvis
for his courtesy in having the Au
gusta delegates to the state con
vention as his personal guest on
his private car.
