on the lnterurban was to blame probably never will be known.

WHAT OF AMERICA?!
Dr. Grace Will Discuss Our|
Militarism
Almost si* years ago the hostili
ties of the great world-war ceased
with Armistice Day. The armed
truce was followed with a nominal
peace treaty. As a matter of fact,
are we not yet living in a state of
armed truce? Did the "war-to
end-war" bring us nearer to that
day when nation shall no longer lift
up sword against nation? Will the
approaching celebration of Arm
istice Day be made a fresh florl
fication of war? The Federal Coun
cil of Churches, representing over
thirty denominations, has urged
that it shall be made the occasion
of Increasing the will to peace.
Throughout Europe there is a
suspicion of America. They cannot
understand our attitude towards
national conferences and agree
ments looking to the outlawing of
all future wars. Minister Trotzsky
of Russia has just declared that
“the United States is assuming a
place In the arena of militarism far
beyond the dream of Balkanized
Europe.” We think such statements
are nonsense, but what are wo doing
to remove such false impressions?
Is the policy of government truly
representing the feelings of Am
erica? Sunday evening, in the First
Baptist church. Dr. Grace will dis
cuss this question. All who are in
terested, whatever their own views
may be, are invited to attend.
HOME ROOFS
Permit Unigue Treatment
With Asbestos Shingles
The shingle roof Is peculiarly an
American Institution, according to
a report issued by roofing authori
ties recently.
'Since our country was first set
tled," It Is explained, "the shingle
roof has been Intimately connected
with Its home development, and Is
still rapidly gaining In popularity.
Witness the great number of mod
ern American town and country
houses surmounted by attractive
smooth or rough-surface shingles.
"There's a reason for this pop
ularity. Which is, that no type of
roof admits of such Individual and
distinctive treatment as does the
shingle roof. The free swinging
lines of roof and gable and dormer,
these lend themselves admirably to
the use of shingles.
"In building a shingle roofed
house, or re-rooflng a house with
shingles, certain things must be
Berlously considered by the owner
if he would secure results that are
lasting and satisfactory. The most
important question which the home
owner or home builder must ponder
are: permanence: maximum beauty
in line and color; and minimum
danger from roof-communicated
fire, the beating of rain or the other
wear and tear of the elements.
Wood shingles possess one of these
qualities but wood will burn and
wear out.
“Then there are several kinds of
shingles which are lmprovments
upon the wood shingle In many re
spects. Among the latter class, the
two principal kinds are asphalt and
asbestos. Of these two the asbes
tos shingle, because of Its Inherent
enduring qualities, Is by far the
most satisfactory. Rigid asbestos
shingles, composed of asbestos fibre
and Portland cement united under
great hydraulic pressure, are In
reality slabs of stone, tough,
resilient, fireproof and able to with
stand all the attacks of the elements
They are made In various colors—
notably gray, red and brown—but
by interspersing with these colors
certain scientifically graduated
shades known as "conglomerate,"
any or all of the various colors may
be Incorporated In a single house In
such a way that they blend har
moniously.
“The advantage of this color ar
rangement Is asbestos shingles—
known to the trade as "colo. blende”
can readily be seen; for now In
erecting your house or In re-rooflng
It Is not necessary for you to con
fine yourself to one single shade or
to stereotyped color arrangement
which may not suit your house's
surroundings.
“The laying of these Colorblende
shingles has been reduced to a
science and authorities on the sub
ject have worked out a means
whereby Just the proper amount of
each particular color Is Included in
each roof to suit Its Individual
needs.
“Fo rexample: a white stucco
house Is admirably topped off by
an arrangement of Indian red color
and shades, 1 2 and 3 of conglo
merate brown. It relieves the plain
severeness of the stone walls and
makes a pleasing contrast. Or, a
roof of conglomerate brown and
natural gray give Just the right
coloring to a buff brick house. On
a red brick house with white mor
tar, high gable, all the colorblende
shades, Indian red, natural gray,
and 1. 2 and 3 of Songlomerate
brown are most satisfactory. Some
times In a red brick house the dark
er shades begin at the eaves of
the roof and slope gradually off to
the lighter shades at the ridge. This,
with the proper inter-mixture of In.
dlan red, gives a distinct and In
dividual Impression as to the man
ner In which the roof was laid. On
houses of the familiar mottled pur
plish-black brick, shades 1, 2 and 4
of conglomerate brown with the
smallest percentage of natural gray
is the proper caper. And so on.
These several Illustrations serve to
show the manner In which the In
dividual house, because of Its color
ing and setting, may be treated.
“During the last half century as
bestos, which is a rock as old as
life Itself on earth, has come great
ly into use. It is a strange sub
stance, as hard and dense as mar
ble yet at the same time having
delicate silky fibres which may be
woven and spun. This mineral has
withstood untold centuries of vol
canic changes, rain and fire, heat
and cold and time. And when united
with cement and placed upon a
house top It affords a roof pro
tection that Is the last word In
durability, not to mention Its qual
ity of beauty.”
