"Before Ton Invest, Investigate," is
the slogan devised und adopted by
the Better Business Bureau, organ
ized In many cities a. auxiliaries to
the advertising clubs. Through these
clubs and with the assistance of the
governor, mayors, hankers, business
men and other leaders In the state
the Georgia Securities Commission,
headed by T. B. Conner, an effort Is
being made to prevent swindles.

DISCUSSES MATTER.
In a letter to the Securities Com
mlHslon, the president of the Central
of Georgia ltallrosd, discussing the
unwise Investments of some of its
employes, says that it is "nothing less
than tragedy.” Men ">rm* away the
savings of a life-time; widows, the
insurance money that should go to
education of their children; the In
firm and aged, their only means of
livelihood.
Though thousands of these casee
are reported to the commission after
the damage has been done, an Inves
tigation of the person or persons seek
ing to sell wares, by writing to the
commission would he the means of
saving thousands of dollars. Though
the guilty parties should be appre
hended, the money Is gone and the
only thing that can be done with the
accused is to place them on the
chalngang, If proven guilty.

sent an advertising car through the
southern part of Georgia, offering
lands of the Choctaw Indian Nation
In Oklahoma. lie secured thousands
of dollar,, from Georgians before we
heard of his operations and obtained
from the proper aothorltles In Wash
ington the lnf< rotation that the lands
were very poor In riunllty and that the
government ‘had been trying to get a I
case ngnlnst this and similar outfits
which had been grafting off the peo
ple of the South

BEING SENT OUT.
"This week we are sending out an
advertisement warning with reference
to the Burnham Chemical Company,
e>f Bonn, Nevada This company has
flooded the Month for two years with
literature, carefully worded to catch
•suckers' and yet not commit itself to
definite statements that would con
vict It of fraud. Complaints against
this concern have been lodged with
the post of sue department for months
by our commission and by practically
every securities department in the
oo untry.

years of successful operation of the

more plentifully supplied with funds
this fall than tney have been in some
years before, resulting in the influx
of numbers of land promoters and se
curities salesmen, and
Whereas. The Georgia Securities
Law, enacted lor the purpose of pre
venting fraud in the purchase of se
curities and lands lying outside of
Georgia, put# every prospective pur
chaser on notice to ascertain whether
or not such salesmen arc armed with
Itemises from the Georgia Securities
Gommiselon, and
Wheyeas, Tlie National Vigilance
Committee of the Advertising Clubs
of the World snd Its affiliated Better
Business' Bureaus throughout the
country havo adopted as a warning
slogan, "Before You Invest, Investi
gate,'’ and the National Association of
Securities Commissioners at Its
seventh annual convention In lllch

governors of the various states to set
aside a week to be devoted to edu
cating the public against such frauds,

served throughout tho state as such;

The Lutheran League Carnival,
which is lo be held Thursday and
Friday evenings, November 20-21,
is expected to even surpass the ex
hibitions staged by that organiaa

weeks of preparation.
The program consists of almost
a 1 the varieties of carnival type of
entertainment. There are to be six
acts of real vaudeville, the program
being entirely new the necond night.

Republic’ Planned

national organization of the
"Watchmen of the Republic" to pro
mote understanding and regard for
the constitution, laws and courts
and to eradicate race, class and re
ligious hatred and prejudice were

Edwin P, Morrow, former gover
nor of Kentucky, was announced
as general chairman of the board
of directors. The organization In

Is Now Open its Entire
Length
ROME, Ga.—The Dixie highway
is open the entire distance from
Detroit, Mich., to its terminus In
Miami, Fla., it was revealed in re
ports on road conditions by direc
tors of the Dixie highway associa
tion In session here Saturday.
Directors report indicated that
the travelable route of the high
way from Michigan points was
from Detroit to Chicago, thence to
Indianapolis, Ind., and to Cincin
nati, Ohio, to Lexington, Ky„ and
thence to Knoxville, then to Chat
tanooga to Atlanta and Macon,
Ga., by the Rome, Ga., route and
Into Florida either at Tallahassee
or Jacksonville and thence to Miami
down the east coast of Florida.
The Carolina division swings off
at Knoxville to Asheville, Green
ville to Nashville. The road starts
at Indianapolis and goes to Louis
ville. From Louisville the going Is
rough but passable. The route from
Nashville to Chattanooga will be
opened next month. From Chat
tanooga the Rome route through
Georgia to Florida is advised.
