HOOVER REVIEWS
BUSINESS 1N U.S.
FOR FISCAL YEAR
WASHINGTON. The advance
in agricultural prices, the begin
ning of sound policies in German
reparations and the recovery of
American Industry aside from agri
culture were characterized as the
three outstanding features of the
past fiscal year in a review of busi
ness conditions made public Mon
day by Secretary Hoover.
IVhile there was some slackening
in activity in some lines during the
latter part of the fiscal year, the
review said, there has since been a
complete recovery.
“The increasing stability in agri
culture,” the secretary said, “is
further marked by the fact that
wholesale prices of food products
show a continuing decrease in
spread as compared to farm prices.
The rise in agriculture prices
while in a large part due to general
world economic re-adjustment and
to settlement of European econo
mic conflicts, has been favored to
some degree by local and special
causes such as the decrease In
corn crop and the fact that the ab
normal world wheat crop of 1923
swung over to a slightly subnormal
crop of 1924."
Secretary Hoover declared trans
portation facilities for the pastj’ear
were adequate in every way for the
i first time since long before the
war. He pointed to the greater
stability of foreign currency as an
other factor in the economic bet
terment of the country and de
clared conditions generally have
been aided by the ratified of the
Dawes plan. The foreign trade of
the nation so improved during the
fiscal year, the secretary said that
America’s favorable trade halanee
increased from $176,000,000 in 1922-
23 to $757,000,000 In 1923-24. This
was due principally, he said, to the
increase in trade with Oceanlca
South America and Asia.
Actors Engage In
Hectic Fisticuff
to Wind Up Ball
NEW YORK—Lowell Sherman,
one of New York’s best known ma
tinee idols and Geo. Baxter also an
actor, used their fists at the Actors’
Equity Association ball which end
'ed at the Hotel Astor early Sun
day. The quarrel between Sherman
and Baxter was caused by Sher
man’s refusal to Introduce Baxter
to Mrs. Lillian Foster, appearing In
a current Broadway show, accord
ing to Baxter. The fight started In
Sherman’s box which he occupied
with his mother and Nora A. Bayes.
Ethel Barrymore occupied an ad
joining box. Both Sherman and
Baxter bore marks of the conflict.
There was no complaint to the
John Saporensky was arrested on

plaint of “Gentleman Jack” O’Brien,
former pugilist who claimed that
S4OO was picked from his pocket
during a fight that started when
somebody knocked the tall hat off
James E. Cabot, an actor.
Basil Gallagher, a newspaper

Ellsworth, Maine, were In trouble
