WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19
SHOW AT TUBMAN IS
AMATEUR SENSATION
OF ENTIRE SEASON
By RICHARD W. RILEY
Clarke Kumraer knew his busi
ness when he named that piece,
•'Good Gracious, Annabelle,” for
the action of the liveily plot takes
one through all the ins and outs
and ups and downs with the peppy
little person, Annabelle Leigh, mak
ing the audience exclaim under its
breath, "Good Gracious, Annabelle,
what will you do next?"
"Good Gracious. Annabelle" play
ed to an almost full house at Tub
man auditorium Tuesday evening,
and to say the folks who went were
appreciative of the efforts of the
local board-artists is to leave out
too many adjectives entirely. Ap
plause thundered frequently, at
times making it necessary for the
play to halt in its rapid-fire prog
ress that the people might "get"
every word. Every member of the
company did unusually well, even
for the Little Theater League, but
the richest laurels unquestionably
belong to Miss Vera Baxter, who
played the vivacious "Annabelle,"
to Harry B. Douglas, taking the
part of George' Wimbledon, the
inebriate millionaire, and Miss
Mary Plumb, as Lottie, the under
cook.
Miss Baxter’s portrayal of Anna
belle was made more striking by
the fact that she accepted the part
just a few days before the play in
place of Miss Evelyn Petit, who
was prevented from going through
with it on account of illness in her
family. Wit, stinging sarcasm, vi
tality and charm were the chief
requisites of the part, and Miss
Baxter more than filled the bill,
living the role of the “poor little
rich girl" who got her allowance
"every quarter and needed it every
second."
Mr. Douglas, who, by the Vay,
impersonated the hermit in "Seven
Keys to Baldpate” last spring, had
a wonderful opportunity for real
acting in “Good Gracious, Anna
belle,” and he took hold of it and
molded it into one of the finest
characterizations ever seen on any
stage in Augusta. His part called
for the double quality of cruel
sternness and rich humor and he
brought out both to wonderful de
grees.
Miss Mary "Plumb demonstrated
that Augusta can now boast of one
of the funniest confcdiennes any
where to be found. The under
-cooks part, a most difficult one,
ine points of make-up and por
trayal, was followed by Miss Plumb
with an adeptness peculiar to the
professional and the audience
laughed uproariously at her and
with her. She was simply a scream
and a most necessary adjunct to
the complete success of the show.
The supporting cast, although
carrying parts most essential to
the play, did not have the oppor
tunities afforded the three above
named. Every member of the com
pany did • unusually well, holding
up their ends of the threads of the
plot in a most admirable manner
and contributing generously to the

the proposed race between the great dirigibles, the Shenan
doah tmd the ZR3, to the North Pole!
Isn't that exciting news children? Just think of these big
balloons racing to the pole, where my workshop is and where'
.Mrs. Santa and the Elves are busy making toys for you! I can
hardly wait to get to Washington, and President Coolidge is
so anxious to have Santa Claus’ suggestions that a special
ship has been sent across the Atlantic to carry me to the U. S.
We expect to make a record trip over, so you can expect to
hear from me the day after tomorrow in New York!
Tomorrow I'll send you a wireless from aboard ship, and
I'll tell you something about how I keep up-with you young
sters thru the year.
Your old rriend,
SANTA CLAVS.
P. S. Can you tell me how long it took the ZR3 to make
its trip from Germany to the U. S.?
To the boy or girl under 10 years, who sends in the first
correct answer to this question, I have directed my represen
tatives at White's to give a Game of Jack Straws.
unqualified success of the produc
tion.
The members of the cast, besides
those already mentioned, were:
Beverly C. Brown, as James Lud
gate; Joe Lee, as Detective Wiclc
man; Harry Fourcher, as Wilbur
Jennings; Cecile Carr Smith, as
Ethel Deane; Alex Rogers, as Al
fred Weatherby: Miss Terence Bat
tey, as Gwendolen Morley; Donald
Saxon, as Alei, the page boy; John
G. Wilson, as William Goslin; A.
IT. DeVaughn. Jr„ as Titcomb;
Charles Smith, as John Rawson;
Doughty Sylvester, as Harry Mur
chison.
The great success of the produc
tion bears the unmistakable stamp
of most capable direction, credit
for which goes to Mrs. Eleanor
Linton Clark, who has worked tire
lessly on the play for five weeks,
and the wonderful reception ac
corded the play Tuesday evening is
an eloquent endorsement of her
achievement.
The executive staff in charge for
the Little Theatre League is as fol
lows: Charles Smith, stage mana
ger; Mrs. Clara Jackson Lee, as
sistant stage manager; Lynn
Drummond, scenery; A. H. De-
Vaughn, Jr., properties; Joe O’Con
nor and John G. Wilson, business
managers; Hugh Kinchley, public
ity.
The Little Theatre League or
chestra. under the direction of Miss
Marie Brenner, furnished a variety
the cold germs. The gentle laxa
tive properties remove congestion
from the system.
Thus, Cheney’s gets right down
to the seat of colds because each
ingredient is carefully chosen to
do its part.
No Harmful Drugs!
Cheney's Expectorant is quick,
safe and dependable—no quinine,
aspirin, equates or harmful drugs.
Prescribed for years for adults and
children. Handy pocket size costs
only few cents and you would not
trade the relief it gives you for
any price.

DEAR CHILDREN:
Here I am in Liverpool,

most important one. Pres
ident Coolidge invites
"The Hon, Saint Nicho

youngsters as Santa
Claus) to attend the con
ference in Washington on
of excellent music between the acts
and in overtures. The audience fre
quently applauded the work of the
musicians as an Important cqn
tributing element to the finished
success of the evening's entertain
ment.

damaged and the men escaped with
a bad shaking up. '
Miss Marie Randall, of Highland

Cedar Creek, were Both badly hurt
late Sunday night, as the result of
the automobile in which they were

bruised about the head and body.
Both cars were badly wrecked.
