BY ROY J. GIBBONS.
JOILKT, 111.—Richard Loeb and
Nathan Leopold Jr. have quit pos
ing.
They have awakened to the enor
mity of their crime.
Fellow prisoners have taken the
conceit out of them. John 1,. Whit
man. warden of the prison, ha.;
quickened their consciences.
Before coming here to spend
"life and 99 years,” the two young
Intellectuals simply made a grand
gesture at existence. They said
they knew no God. no law, no mas
ter, no restraint.
But. us guards at the peniten
tiary will tell you:
"That's a lot of bunk. They’re
Just two fresh kid*.”
Qulth a step-down that, from the
role of supermen. Quite a leap from
money glory to anonymous station
city- of the "living dead.”
NEITHER EVER WILL
BE A TRUSTY.
"I-oeb and Leopold, to me, as the
agent of the state to punish and
reform them, mean no more than
any other prisoners." the warden
says.
“They are at the bottom of the
scale In grade and will rise under
our merit system as they deserve.
"I have put both boys In the
chair factory. They are In differ
ent parts of tho building, however,
and do separate work.
“Loeb runs a drilling machine
and makes the holes In the bottom
of the chairs Into v. hlch the legs
fit. Leopold Is In the rattan sec
tion and makes their chair bot
toms.
"Their next advance Is to the new
prison. Over there are a number of
cell houses where Jurisdiction and
supervision lessens as the prisoner
Is advanced. The highest type
prisoner Is the trusty. He works
on our honor farm without guard.
"Loeb and Leopold never will at
tain this grade. Their crime was
too spectacular. Fellow prisoners
would set traps for them Into
which they would fall and Incur
the displeasure of the prison of
ficials.
"Leopold has had a better chance
at adapting himself. He started In
making more chair bottoms than
ever had been made before In a
single day by any other prisoner.
But that had to bo stopped.
"The other prisoners would have
grown to hato him If he had been
allowed to continue. They would
have ‘framed’ him.
“It Is hard to explain such thing*
to one unfamiliar with prison life.
But those wno have been around
prisons understand them."
HE BREAKB THEIR
BUPERMAN COMPLEX
As keeper of this nameless city.
Whitman started to Invade the
egotism of tho two killers as soon
as they were admitted.
Whitman has a way with con
victs. He has worked with them
and for them for 35 consecutive
years In various penal Institutions.
More than 200,000 prisoners have
passed through his hands.
''We will make Loeb and Lrn
pold subservient. Their supermen
exaggeration must ho broken. They
must realize that now It Is the peo
ple of the state thev must ohey."
That Is what the warden said
when they came In. And he has
done It.
In achieving his purpose he has
resorted In no punishment. In fact,
never has he raised hla voice.
Whitman Is regarded as one of
the moat influential authorities on
penology Ih the country.
Whatever tho future may hold
for l.oeb afid Leopold rests in his
hands.
Tho warden expects to make use
of l.oeb and Leopold ns full-tlfna
teachers If they prove themselvet
worthy. Hut that will he only after
tho new 110.000,000 model peniten
tiary Is completed.
THE WALLS HAVE
AWAKENED THEM.
"If Loch and Leopold can't adapt
themselves us teachers there Is
plenty of office work Into which
they may fit. lint to graduate from
the manual labor Into a job re
quiring brain work, they shall first
have to prove themselves worthy.
"So far both have been mod >1
prisoners I think we have brok
en down thetr silly super-man
complex."
Whitman Is a hellever In kind
ness and the prisoners call his wlfo
an "angel."
Loeb and have come to
Idolize her.
The Whitmans sit with convicts
when they nttend chapel and they
march to the communion rail with
convicts.
Whitman Is a gray-halred kind
ly faced man who neither molly
coddles nor brutalizes. Prisoners
are free to come to him and ex
plain their difficulties. He always
tells them to get their grievances
“off their chest."
He has had l.oeb and la>opold In
for one of “the family Interviews."
Since then Hobble FYanks' mur
derers have undergone a noticeable
change In behavior.
"I catlght I.oeh .blubbering In hie
cell the other night." a guard said.
"fluess the walls have awaken
ed 'em up. They always do sooner
