Lee Slater Over man, of Salisbury, junior U. S. sen ator from North Carolina, the writer first gleaned a few Items concerning the Republicans of the state. „„„ It seems there are about 100,000 Republicans In the state, the party usually, having a state ticket In the field, Including governor, as this year. They are credited with five members in the upper and ten members In the lower house of the legislature. They were represented by one regiment on the Federal side during the War between the States. Good Americans, native to the Southern soil and sharing the trnlts of all the oldest settlers, these Republican rovters have all the privileges to be enjoyed, of course, In the way of free and frank speech, oral and written. In the contention for their policies this gives them advantage over the alien importation who has no con* 1 cern as a citizen higher than his own selfish alms. Of course In a political race they likewise have the privilege along with any other body of using any amount ol "bunk" thought necessary to attain the coveted end of party success* The Independence of these TW> Ilnel folks in all matters is an out* standing characteristic, and taken by a visitor us accounting for muett of the success of state-wide move ments. The people on opposing sides of an issue thrash things out in a fair way, yet decided, and when tho scufflo Is over they may have bruised themselves a little, a better result than butchering the project in question. In speaking of the part North' Curollna took In the Civil War, Senator Overman referred to a fact not usually known, which the writer, because born in the Old Dominion, was not expected to chuckle over. The senator points to the historical admission that In Pickett's famous charge more North Cnrollnlnns were kilted and fewer taken prisoner than from the ranks of the Virginia troops, a correction of the»popular estimate, which has usually been partial to the Virginia side. Between Senator Overman and the postmaster holding that posi tion under every Republican ad ministration for forty-two years exists a life-long friendship, a large portrait ot the senator hang ing in the office of the postmaster. Tile senator himself, modestly as lie moves among tiie associates of a lire-time, having been born right here 70 years ago, is Justly popular and beloved. Picturesque in his gentleman-planter hat and cut away frock, carrying a cane he does not lean upon, ho would be marked a block away as a man of im portance, Going from the speakership of ths house of the state body 21 years ago, Senator Overman has been ranking Democrat on three Im portant committees—rules, approp riations und Judiciary, being active chairman of the last. it 1* pleasant for a Georgian 44 hear the senator allude to his as sociation with Georgia represent** lives. ll* liked Tom Watson a* h 4 knew him in his ln»t days In Wash* lngton; closely thrown with Bans • ator Bacon for years, he was ver# | fond of him, and has a full aps predation the state’s present reps resentntlves. As a lawyer the private carte# of .Senator Overman has been snot cesbful. and as testimonial of bid popularity anecdotes are told of blf rising fortunes. When private eeos reiury of famous Governor gel I Vance, young Overman was paylni ! court to ths charming and brlllian i daughter of Chief Justice Merry i mail, who was In the race with th [ governor for (lie U. 8. senatorshli The race between Ids patron ani ills prospective father-in-law iru not exactly comfortable to Mfc Overman. He went to Governo# Vance to offer bis resignation. “Now, Lee,” as Mrs. OvermiA tells it, "don't you worry, for fl Merrynian can stand you as a oorld In-law, I cun stand you as prIVaW secretary-” Looking young nnd bright her flowers in their beautiful hotnX Mrs. overman spends most of nS lime in this rather than the (.’aril'll home, usuully Joining -the senate# in Washington for the last tUr*d months of the winter season. Nor are there any "evenlfH shadows” either upon the path***# of the senntor himself. Alert drtd blithe, he takes an Interest in rJJ community matter*, civil and eoaML and his constituents aay if he do|d not go to Jlenven before then, tt# will be sent to Washington tat 0 fourth term of six years. Senator Overman made speech*# In the late campaign, as did also hid grandson, Lee Overman Gregory, aa on-coming young lawyer, and Mr#, Gregory was vice-chairman of tit# county campaign committee. THANKSGIVING DAY i TO WITNESS A FINE THEATRICAL PROGRAM Tim Augusta theatres are all oN ferlng extra fine programs for Thanksgiving Day In furtherance of the holiday spirit that alwajrs prevails on that day. The Imeprlal Theatre will pres sent, in matinee and evening show*, "Seventh Heaven", one of the lat est hits from Broadway, advance press dispatches saying It Is one of the best shows out this season. The matinee opens at 8 o’clock and evening at 8:30. Seats can now be reserved. The Modjeska offers one of Its banner bills of the year In David Wnrk Griffith’s super production, "America.” This Is hailed as a historical and a dramatic classic, and has received the hearty en dorsement of patrlotlo organiza tions all over the country wherever shown. The local D. A. R’s. are sponsoring Its here and are urging every man, woman and child In the city to see It, both for its historical value and for the wholesome enter tainment it provides. The Rialto brings Mary Phllbta, known as the "wonder girl of the screen,” In "The Gaiety Girl.” Mary Phllbln Is well known to the screen funs’ of Augusta nnd her new pic ture has received a great deal of commendation In tho larger cities where It was recently shown. As added tid-blts, the Rialto also has a Spats comedy, “Hot Stuff”, and a Kox News reel. Have you something to* sale? Augusta Herald Want Ac's sell EVERYTHING. Phone us—296.
