SMITH’S FUNERAL SERVICES Was Laid to Rest at Oak land Cemetery in Atlanta I ATLANTA, a.—The funeral ser-! vic-s over the remains of Dr. Hil dreth H. Smith, father of Governor Hoke Smith, who died Monday morn ing, were conducted Tuesday mottl ing at 10 o'clock from the residence, 582 West Peachtiee by Rev. Charles T. A. Pise, dean of St. Phillips Epis copal church. Interment followed at Oakland cemetery. Hundreds of friends were present to pay the last sad rites at the bier of fho distinguished scholar and ed ucator. Mr. Smith died lu his 89th year and his death was due entirely to the Infirmities of age. He is sur vived by his wife and four children. Governor Hoke Smith, Mr Burton Smith and Mrs. F. S. Whiteside, of Atlanta, and Mrs. Everett MeAshan of Houston Texas. It is doubtful if Dr. Smith hud his superior in the south as a man of broad learning and culture. He was a mathmatician ot rare ability. H: was especially fond of astronomical research, and his mind was stored with all the Information on this in teresting subject. He spoke several lancusges. He was for ma"v years 1 connected with educational instltu-1 tlnns, but of recent years devoted his time to literary work. His passing away removes a very able man.
