Thursday night. Sept, 24th—“ The

“The Wolf” Tonight.
Of “The Wolf,” Eugene Walter’s fa
mous and successful drama which
comes to the Grand tonight, much
has been written of a laudatory- na
ture by the critics, and particularly
of the intense and novel climax to
each of its three acts. The close of
the last act. especially is declared to
be one of the most unique and strik
ing seen in a number of years. The
hero and the villain of the drama
fight a duel almost entirely in the
dark, and the audience can only see
the two figures In a fierce encounter
without belie able to distinguish
which is which. When one of them
finally falls dead and the victor
stands over him the spectators are
not sure of the Identity of either.
This Is disclosed by the light of a
match, with which the hero sets fire
.to his cigarette. The appearance of
,the white face of the winner, stand
ing out of the surrounding blackness
in the fiare of the match flame is so
dramatic an incident that the ap
plause at the Lyric theatre. New
York, was often delayed while the
audience took in the picture. As the
j light begins to flicker and burn out,
the applause starts and grows into
a deafening avalanche.
This Is melodrama—real, stirring
melodrama of the good old-fashioned
kind, according to the critics of the
metropolitan dallies—and yet the
'wise Brnadival audience, generally
so cool and disdainful, did not real
ize that it was. and lent itself to ap
plause as vociferous as any “gallery
god" ever did. That was the remark
able thing aboil, the great success of
“The Wolf"—Eugene Walter, its au
thor. demonstrated that a play ran
be a truly great work, a masterpiece,
in fact, and still be melodrama.
The*— Is an old saying that “all
the world loves a lover." and It Is
equally that all the world loves melo

“Devil’s Auction.”
It has been customary in the major
lty of all large scenic plays or spec
tacles, in making an instantaneous
change of scene, to darken the stage
and auditorium by lowering all lights
'■ to the point of deepest darkness, and
while the audience sat in gloom, the
stage-hands, by means of revolving
;cen“ry or other methods, made the
"instantaneous chance” in question.
Manager Chas. H. Yale, however,
has Introduced an Innovation in this
lire in the 2fith edition of his “Ever

change has been prepared showing
"The Realms of Mephlsto,” this elab

tire depth of the stage and at a cue
clta ses to "The Beautiful Valley of
Andoche,” a beautiful pastoral scene
complete in every detail, the change
being made In the full open light with
