Augustans Given Practi cal Demonstration That as Fine Work Can be Done at Home as Anv wher Else. More and more forcibly every day do we hav e cause to realize that ev erything for which there can be any possible need in Augusta can be had right her e in itCNLista. With us, in short, the patronage of home industries Is not a matter of mere sentiment attended by all man ner of inconveniences, but a practical, easy working proposition. Time was when ther e existed a generally prevaiing impression that if anything out of the ordinary in the printing line had to be done, it should be sent to New York or to some one of the other large cities. This Idea no longer exists because the Phoenix Printing Company of Augusta has proven it to be an absolutely absurd one. They have proved it, we say, repeatedly, but never has this proof seemed quite so conclusive as when it takes the form of the new catalogue of the P. J. Berckmans Company, in which are set forth all the glories of Fruitland Nurseries, and in which we see exemplified to absolute perfection the splendid work that comes from the Phoenix presses. Forty-two years ago the Fruitland Nurseries issued its first catalogue, and began with twenty acres planted in nursery stock. This has now evolved into the largtst commercial nursery in the middle south, and where a larger line of products arc grown than in any other similar south ern establishment. The tremendous | improvement so marked in this in dustry is equally as conspicuous in the catalogue that tells of it, a cata logue that bears all the hallmarks of the most finished wormanship. a catalogue that typographcially and ar tistically leaves nothing to be de sired. The cover, printed in four tones, and presenting an exquisitely realistic view of a rose-wreathed trellis sup ported by a marble terrace gleaming brightly againHt a background of blue sky and dark green foliage, makes one of the most attractive pictures it is possible to imagine. In its center Is a medallion bearing the Fruitland's monogram, or one might say court-of arms. There is a clearly printed, compre hensive introduction, after which a number of pages are devoted to each department in turn, the nursery de partment, th,. greenhouse and plant department, the landscape and en gineering department, and then in formation regarding foreign trade prices, etc. In almost every page there is some illustration, a faithful reproduction of some photographic view of house, grounds, shrubbery, rose garden or vine. In addition, there are photo graphs of single leaves or flowers, all so distinct and clear, with each vein and tendril so perfectly reproduced that the catalogue might be used as a text hook for the study of botany. The descriptive paragraphs are printed in a large, heavy black type ihat make them easily readible by the old gardener dependent upon a good light and exactly the right spectacles for the perusal of themes he finds so congenial. th e muddled effect so often distinguishing a publication of thiß ; kind being foreign to these par ! ticular paces as it is possible for any , thing to be. If there is a typographical error in the forty-eight pages of valuable In formation or in the concise and mag -1 nificentiy elucidating index it cannot ib e discovered. In brief, there is nothing at which ! to cavil and everything that is to be admired. All of which means a great d il for the P .1. Berckmans Corn pane, still more for the Phoenix Print mg Company, and a veritable triumph for Greater Augusta.
