As many Augustans have been tor mented by the virions little mosquito, especially during the last few nights, It would not be amiss for them to study the habits of this very annoy ing and aggressive little insect. As it is generally known that still pools of water, however small, are the brtedjng places of the mosquito it can he easily explained why at this time there are so many of these in sects, with long proboscis. In the city. Innumerable pools and puddles have been left by the recent freshet In ceilarr. drains, etc., and as It has been just a little over two weeks broods of mosquitoes have had time to hatch out and now Infest the town generally. There are three kinds of mosqui toes to be considered In this local tty; The house mosquito (ctilex pi pirns), the malarial mosquito (anopheles marulipennis), and the yellow fever mosquito (strgomyia fascist* i. he house mosquito bejn the * t common. The house mosquitoes have clear wings, and when alighted their body lies parallel to tin; object on which they rest, while the malarial mosqui to has brown spotted wings and its body rests at a considerable angle with the surface upon which it alights Then the yellow fever mosquito with Its handed legs, sliver striped thorax and abdomen can be readily distin guished from the other two species. The life history of llu-so three spe cies are very similar, so It will he necessary lo take up only one, as an example, the house mosquito (ctilex plplens). Now the insect may stay in this form for some time as this period is regulated by food 1 supply and temperature, In summer I months when the water is warm and | there is plenty of food to In- had it may reach Its full growth in a week, but later in the year this period lasts considerably longer. The next stage Is the pupal stage. The insect then assumes a hunched !up form and does not eat. It usually 'stays in tnls form about two days. | then the adult mosquito with long wings, long antennae and proboscis emerges from a rent In the hunched up back.
