DIVORCE SCENE ENACTED IN FRONT OF VAUDEVILLE In front, of the vandevlUo, which Is about to open and where a successful divorce play was given last winter a real divorce scene has just been enacted which Is, however, far from the vaudeville type. The police then took affair and arrested the husband, while his wife was taken to a hospital, not quite dead, but very nearly so. The young soldier who was on sick fur lough was afterwards waimilv con gratulated by the magistrate for his brave deed. THE AUGUSTA HERALD LARGE DOCKET IN POLICE COURT Tuesday’s Session Largest in Six Months Negro Women in Majority. There was the largest (Tuesday morning) docket at. recorder’s court Tuesday that has been up for some months. There were 23 cases In tin docket and 11 cases of reports and releaMd on bond. There was the usual crowd of drunks. They will spend 5 days In jail to recuperate from the Jag. Clara Wimberly and Georgia O'Con nor, two negressss, had a fuss. The recorder decided that *ls or 30 days would cure them of the habit of rais ing a disturbance on the streets. Ressie Williams, the ngro woman who was beaten by Mr. J. B. Amick for cursing his wife, was released by the recorder. He thought that she had been punished enough, as there were several strips of com (.-plaster on her head. Lulu Hayes, a negress, wa3 given *ls or 30 days for fighting. Georgia Benton and Lizzie Ander son were given *ls or 30 days for fighting. Calvin Smith and Bell Russell were charged with violating the 460th sec tion. The evidence showed that, he bad heat the woman. The recorder gave him *IOO or 90 days for beat ing her and dismissed the case of vio lating the 460th against Bell Russell. torn Johnson, a negro, was bound over to the city court, by the recorder Tuesday morning for larceny from the person. Bailiff Sturges, of the city court, accompanied by Sergeant Peeples and Officers Horn, Caudle and M. O. Mat thews, raided a gambling den on tho corner of Center and Reynolds streets Monday night at 8:30 o’clock. The place was operated by Turner Jack son. The officers took the gamblers by surprise and ten of them were cap tured. The negroes arrested were: Turner Jackson, Tom Richardson, Neal Phillips, Son Lloyd, George Ma honey, Ben Wilson, Charlie Rich, Ar thur McCauley, Joe Johnson and Clar ence Holmes. They were given a preliminary hear ing in recorder's court Tuesday morn ing and were bound over to the city court for gambling, with the excep tion of Turner Jackson. MANAGER WOOD INSPECTING TERRACE Head of Big Winter Hotel is in the City With Pub licity Agent. Mr. C. A. Wood, who has obtained control of Hampton Terrace hotel, ar rived in Augusta tills morning, ac companied by his publicity agent, Houston R. Harper, and a thorough inspection was made of the hotel to day. Mr. Wood is one of the leading hotel men in the country and now operates the Bellevue hotel in Bos ton, the Piedmont in Atlanta and has just closed Toxaway inn after a sue. cessful season. According to present plans the new management will open Hampton Ter race on January 5, next and a large number of guests are already promis ed for the opening. In making a pre liminary survey of the hotel and sur roundings this morning, Mr. Wood an nounced that several minor changes would be made in order to bring tin place up to the most modern de signs. Mr. Jackson and Mr. League accompanied the party thiough the hotel and grounds and Mr. Wood is sure he can bring a large number of new visitors to Augusta this season to spend the winter. He states that he will operate the place with the best force procurable and consequently the hotel will be tip to the highest standard. A vigorous campaign will be started at once to get visitors for the winter and there is no apprehension felt on the part of the new operator. Mr. Wood will leave She city tj night.
