SLIDING INTO THIRD FIFTY THOUSAND FANS WILL SEE GIANTS PLAY (By Sam Crane.) NEW YORK. -When the Giants and Cubs begin their first game of the double header at the Polo Grounds this after noon, 50,000 fans will be on hand to wit ness the progress of the struggle of the series which will practically decide the winner of the National League pennant. Thirty-five thousand people will be crowded into the grounds, 12,000 more will watch the game from the top of Coogan's bluff, while fully 3,000 will find room to witness the proceedings from the elevated tracks. Aftd what a strug gle it will be. A>oth teams are in gratia condition and it will be light, fight, fight from the rail of the first game until the last man is out in the second battle. There is no more cause for till the cold feet shown yesterday by local fans over the defeat of the Giants by the Pirates than there was on Saturday. Of course, tne Cubs brace of victories over the Phillies sort o’ put a spice of doubt into the situation, but only enough to add a little bit more interest, to the season of baseball that has been so replete with sensations as to the historical. In fact, the season of 1908 will go down in the history Of the national game as one that has been of more interest to the public than any year probably since the game reached such prominence. Large crowds are waiting for the gates to open today.
