Sec STATE TICKET OF THE INDEPENDENTS UNEQUALED ENTHUSIASM EN SUED WHEN THEIR TICKET WAS PLACED IN THE FIELD HEARST SPEAKS —• Makes Startling De nouncements Against the Leaders of the Older Parties NEW YORK. —Enthusiasm swept I through Cooper Union like an ava lanche as the Independence party j placed in the field its complete state ticket late Thursday night. The state - conventions of the republican and democratic parties saw no such out bursts as attended the naming of the state ticket of the new party. After a session extending into the early hours of today the following j ticket was named: Governor—Clarende J. Shearn of New York. Lieutenant Governor —Daniel Finn!- more of St. Lawrence. Secretary of State—Frank H. Stev ens of Nassau. Comptroller—Willard H. Glenn of Onondaga. Attorney General —William A. De ford of Albany. State Treasurer—Dr. William I. Slr ovich of New York. State Engineer and Surveyor— M. J. Cafiero of Kings. Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals—Reuben R. Lyon of Steu ben. When Mr. Hearst appeared before the convention there was a big dem onstration. For ten minutes there was not the slightest diminution of the noise. Then as the cheering died away Mr. Hearst stepped to the front of the platform and began his speech. Sensational revelations had been , expected and the convention was not i disappointed. Mr. Hearst at first re viewed briefly the work that has been 1 going on for the past few weeks. Turning to New York state he de- j dared that. Mr. Hughes throughout his term has served the privileged interests like the trained corporation lawyer that he is. j Chanler, he described as the "pock :et piece” of Charles Murphey, ”ruh ; bed smooth by Murphy’s soiled thumb and a political turncoat.” Then he read court records to show | that Charles N. Haskell, in Ohio, had appeared as attorney in the amalga mation of the Illinois Steel company and the Federal Steel company, and how, having affected the transfer, he sued the Trust for $50,000 fees. Further than this. Mr. Hearst quot ed from a speech made by Mr. Has kell at a banquet in Tulsa. Oklahoma, last February, in which Mr. Haskeil defended the Standard Oil company, praised its "plan for business," and declared that it had "done wonders in the United States.” Then lie read a letter from Senator John L. McLaurin of South Carolina, who dickered with Archhold of th"e Standard (41, and asked for Standard Oil support to help him beat Tillman for re-election to the senate. He showed bv personal letters from i Congressman Sibley that he had hint j <‘d to Archhold. In a letter, that the ! friendship of a well known republi can senator'could be secured by the oil trust for a loan of $1,600. Mr Sibley’s language in suggest ing the loan was: "Do you want to make the Invest ment. He is one who will do any thing In the world that is right for his friends If ever needed." Mr. Hearst read a letter from John P. Elkin of Pennsylvania, who asked I Archhold to take an interest in the straight republican ticket and see ' that it got through." Another letter bore the signature lof Archhold and was addressed to N, F. Clark of Pittsburg. In it Mr Arch bold spoke of the coming election of a democratic senator ‘ln West Vlr ginia, and asked Mr. Clark to use his Influence to have Governor Flom Ing declare himself a candidate, "as there Is no man better qualified or who would make a more capable sen ator." The nomination of Clarence .1. Shearn for governor came as a cli max to an ovation in his honor which began when the delegates saw him enter the hall, and did not end till the convention adjourned AVl.it * • ■il six.it forest fire can do to ihe toothpick supply!
