The flower stand there on the
edge of the pavement where are sold
all the choicest blossoms of a forced
springtime were piled high with the
rich yield of garden and hoi-house,
giving out so rich a perfume that all
the air around was laden with the
heaven-sent sweetness too attention
compelling to be ignored.
One, passing carelessly by, looked
and began to wonder what was the
profit in this kind of trade. How
many dollars and cents did each per
fect flower represent, he asked him
self.
Another, passing, was struck by
the beauty of the eweet messengers
of a fruithful earth and a beneficient
heaven, and there instantly came to
him beatific vision of an old-time
garden where was rest for the weary
inspiration for the spiritually need'-
and a love unspeakable the merit
echoing memory of which was suffi
cient to glorify ail the earth.

The latest interesting comment on
the appearance of the president-elect
comes to us from Grovetown, where
an old darkey who saw Mr. Taft in
the great touring car in which he
made a journey to the charming lit
tle village, said: “I sho’ don’ believe
de president sot for dem newspaper
picters hisself, for dey don' look like
liim a bit. Dey is too bowdacious."

It is stated that more fruit is be
ing bought and consumed in Augusta
just., now than ever before in
the city’s history. The question
that, naturally suggests itself in con
nection with the matter is that which
asks whether or not prohibition has
anything to do with it. It is a rec
ognized fact that the taste for strong
drink that is denied gratification
frequently turns to a taste for fruits,
especially fruits with certain acid
qualities. But be the reason what it
may, the large consumption of fruit
is something greatly to be approved
lrom a hygienic standpoint, and cer
tainly scores one for the vegeta
rians.

One of the most pleasing stories
that has come to us in connection
with the deeds of mercy done in be
half of the earthquake suffers in
Italy hafe to do with the little Prin
cess Yolanda, the seven year old
daughter of the king. It had not been
desired to tell her anything about the
terrific disaster that had plunged her
country into woe, but she sadly
missed her devoted parents, and it
became necessary to explain to her
why the king and queen were both
away. Immediately she conceived the
idea of collecting contributions among
her little playmates, and she herself
made the first contribution, which
was nothing less than her first gold
ring that had been given her by the
dowager queen, Margherita. The
heir apparent contributed a headless
doll, which probably was quite as
dear to him as was her ring to his
sister.

Those who are most opposed to the
idea of women enjoying the suffrage
are inclined to lay the blame upon
the fact that today it is cheapo
buy stockings than to knit them, an
; economic condition giving women
j much leisure time that must be fi 11-
!ed in one way or another. Which
inclines those who rather sympathize
with women in this matter to ask
if it is thought they would be quite
so anxious to vote if there were a
fairer division of the family income
or if women wage earners were paid
as good salaries as those given merj
for the same work.
A Christmas aftermath.
This is really what it is, although
it is a lesson in sweet unselfishness
that might be potent at any season.
It was at a Christmas tree given
the little children of the poor that
each child was permitted to go into
the enclosure about the tree and
choose for himself or herself just ono
toy. Sometimes there was a break
for the gate with an arrhful of toys,
but there the child was always stopp
ed and compelled to make a final de
cision.
It was noted by those in attend-

It was reported to The Herald by
several Augustans whose veracity can
not be doubted thal a slight flurry
of fine, very fine snow was detected
about 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon.
The crystal articles were infinitely
small, so very tiny, in fact, that only
a few ki.en-eytd persons saw Uie
snow.
There is a decidedly perceptible
“feel" of snow in the atmosphere to
day. A cold, snarling, north-east
wind sweeps every exposed area, and
seems to breathe the chill of snow
clad mountain tops. Observer Fish
er’s report predicts still colder
weather.
ance that the little girls almost, al
ways chose something for some baby
sister at ijpme, while the boys chose
; wagons, tops or jack knives. There
j was just one shining exception to the
boys’ general rule of self-seeking.
This little fellow seized upon two
toys, a wagon calculated to bring
pure rapture to the soul of any boy
ish owner and a superlatively beauti
ful doll One must be given up, and
s it was easy -to sco the struggle thar
;’was going on in the little mind torr:
a personal desire for the
wagon and the unselfish wish for Ills
sister to have the doll. A close ob
server noted the small chin take no
more determined lines, and the little
shoulders square themselves as the
' child gave back the wagon and kept,
the doll. /

It has long ago been proven that
the day of miracles is not past, but
many of us still cling to the old idea
that the wonders of fairy tales can
1 never be equalled in Twentieth Cen
j f ury every-day life.
However, certain statistical facts
| brought out at the New Year prove
that various branches of our govern
ment achieve greater marvels by far
than those accomplished in “The Ara
bian Nights.”
Powerful as were the genii who
served the fortunate mortals winning
them for slaves, they are never rec
orded as having done more than one
thing at a time, while our modern
genii are called upon to do a thousand
things at once, and to do them with t
thoroughness and a despatch thal
would have given the genii of oid j
nervous prostration. Evbn Aladdin’s
famous Genius of the I,amp was a
personage of small importance in
comparison with the modern Genius
of the Stamp. No Arabian genius
was ever called upon to collect a mil
lion articles, large and small, from a
hundred thousand different towns and
deliver them at a hundred and thou- j
sand different towns in time for the i
intended recipient of each to receive !
them with the rolls and coffee at
breakfast. Yet the Genius of the
Stamp does this every day. To he
sure, he doesn’t, do all the work by I
himself, but it is just as remarkable j
that he has control over one hundred
and twenty-five thousand assistants,
that is to say about as many assist
ants as there were people in all Ara
bia in Aladdin’s day.

COLDEST WEATHER OF THE
YEAR
This is the coldest, spell of the year.
The great wave of frigidity has sailed
over the South from the Northwest
and has left a trail of discomfort In
Its wake. Now Is the time for every
one to take precautions against cold
and dampness. Grip weather is about
due and those who are wise prepare
to avoid this pest of the winter
months. Keep the feet warm is a
good bit of advice to 'everyone. How
to do this is explained in the adver
tisement. of the Rice & O’Connor
Shoe Co., In another place In today’s
Herald, This big firm means what
it says about It stocks, and It will
pay everyone whether head of a fam
ily or merely a member to read this
ad, and pay attention to Its con
tents. L
