HENRY P. DOWNING
Dan Looney, a former , city

wounded Saturday afternoon by Mr.
Henry P. Downing, an engineer on
the Georgia railroad. The shooting
occurred in Hudson’s drug store on
the corner of Mclntosh and Fenwick

the groin. It is not thought the
wound will prove fatal.
Mr. Downing gave himself up. He

JURY EXONERATED
PATROLMAN HORNE
Decided He Killed Negro in
Discharge of His Duty
and in Self-Defense.
An inquest was held Friday after
noon over the remains of Robert
Mack, who was shot and killed by
Officer Lee Horne. The jury returned
a verdict exonerating Mr. Horne. The
story told by Officer Horne was cor
roborated by a negro hackman by the
name of Walker.
There was a large number of wit
nesses before the coroner, but only
two gave testimony that had much
bearing on the case. •
The hackman, Walker, testified to
going into the yard to take out his
horse, when Mack ran up to him and
wanted his pistol. He gave him the
pistol and he ran back out front. In
a few minutes Walker heard firing.
Going to the front he found Mack
against the fence. Mack told him
that Mr. Horne had shot him, but
that he had shot him for another man.
This was the statement that Mack
made to the physicians at the hos
pital.
A negress testified that just after
the shooting began a mulatto negro,
whom she did not see plainly, run
through the house and out the back
way. The police believe that he is
one of the negroes who were shooting
at the officer from tlje porch.
The jury returned a verdict that
Officer Horne had killfed the negro
in the discharge of hislduty and in
self-defense. '

ag.o of Capt. Renkl, Lieutenant Mc-
Clellan has been acting captain, and
ho has done a gerat work for the com

which enlisted the hearty support and
co-operation of all the men, that the
Oglethorpes made such a good show
ing at the last annual inspection.
Lieutenant McClellan was formally
nominated by the Oglethorpes Friday
hight. Immediately after election, he
will stand the regqJßr captain's ex
amination, and expects to receive his

Wants
night with his lecture “In the Year
Two Thousand.”
Mr. Weiboum dealt with the pro
gress of science as the basis upon
which to figure the future. He saids
that the power of the future, in his
opinion, would be drawn from three
sources. These were the heat of the
sun, the heat in the interior, of the
earth and the water power of the
world.
The transmission of power also
came in for a goodly share of I •
discourse. He used a miniature wire
less telegraph apparatus and showed
in many ways the manner of send
ing power, light and sound throu: ♦
space without the use of wires.
Mr. Welbourn closed his lecturv
with the thought that when man ha *
mastered the great forces of the uni
verse war would become so terrible
that It would not be engaged in.
Men, too, would better understand
each others viewpoint and would be
tolerant of each others opinions.
Then he said would come universal
peape. A very large audience greet
ed the lecturer and applauded him
enthusiastically throughout his lec
ture and demonstrations.
