THE PHANTOM SHIP
(By Henry Dagnerrhes.)
"I war Quito young,” the old ervm
modoro began, "when I saw my phan
tom fthlp, a plain brig. I had enltgltod
an mlilHliipman on board the disprdrh
corvette I’allnittr, crntalng tn the Wflßt
Intllos. Alt hough sho wan called a
corvette, I'altniure tind no ml.lsen
mam and wbh therefore really a brtg
"Of the seven officer* on board the
Qiinitennnster was tho most pictur
esque. Me was the most Inveterate
HOarehor of naval nrelitvefl that f
have ever met during all tho years
I have spent, on the briny His firm
care whenever lie boarded a vsfisel
jvan to put In order what he catted
the family papers of liln office, that
la to aay to look up the history of
the vessel and of all other vessels
who tmd provloiiHly sailed u nder tho
same name. Ond I’altniure had among
Its ancestors a Humour vessel, the brtg
I‘allmure, which In 1808 had tn these
same Weal Indian waters defended
her colors until her powder gave up
against, the thirty guns of the British
frigate Circe.
"I no page of our naval history
which tho unfortunate battle of Tra
falgar has overshadowed, onr quar
termaster had entered In his own
hand and on elegent sheets of finest
vellum In the hope, I fmptHise, that
sooner or later they would bring him
glofy nnd honor.
“On the thirty-first day of the
month, Hie anniversary of the fight
with the Circe, the quartermaster, at
I o’clock tn the afternoon, wont up
on Hie bridge to ask our exact loca
tion and was greatly agitated when
told where we were.
"I shall now endeavor to tell the
fuels just as I remember them and
as they should have been entered In
the ships logbook, If -
"At I o'clock In the afternoon the
Pallmure was sailing slowly with All
sails set. for a gentle breeze from
northeast. Tho sea la bathed In light,
the swell almost Imperceptible.
"At D o'clock the vensel Is still b
sight and her position to us Is about
fli** same, though she Is now floating
on the sea. At 4 o’clock there are a
few clouds on flio sky The- quarter
master again mounts tne bridge and
looks long and carefully at, our neigh
bor, Then he suddenly exc.lalme:
"'it Is her,' rushes down Into his
cabin and locks his door before any
one lihh a chance to ask for explana
tions.
“We endeavor to get a good view of
the ship In our glasses, but as soon
ns we have located her she disap
pears and dissolves Into a brownish
fog which seems to obscure the
glasses, though It Is not noticeable
to the naked eye. While we are dis
cussing this strange phenomenon the
clouds are gathering rapidly and now
look like a thick wall all along the
southwestern horizon Into which the
mysterious vessel suddenly seem* to
disappear.
“At 5 o’clock the commander conies
upon tho bridge. He looks nick and
pale, hut he has a chair brought out
and sits down to watch the evening
drill of clearing the decks for action.
At half past five tho order Ir giver,
there Is a roll of drums and then *l
- W<» have all turned around
and are facing aft, only the command
er Is looking towards the how, Sud
denly the pale and feeble man jumps
to his feet and mechanically all our
eyes follow the direction of hns finger.
"And this Is what we six officers
of the Pallmure saw: The gray wall
of clouds has been suddenly split and
In the rift there Is a vessel framed by
the dark fdood*. This time she does
n</i look like a phantom ship. She Is
a brig, hearing down upon ns with
all sails set Closer and closer It
comes, running as though a channel
of fire. We can now plainly see her
portholes and the muzzles of her guns.
Then from the guns come flashes of
fire, clouds of white smoke and In
another moment the vessel has once
more been swallowed up by the gray
clouds.
"A strange figure dressed In a uni
form long time ago Tut of use, rushes
up on deck of our Pallmure, shouting
hoarse rrles of command thrpugh an
Improvised speaking trumpet: 'Maka
reedy to hoard tho euhtny; draw your
cutlasses; stick pistols In your belts —'
"Then comes the shout; man ov»»-
board.
"This Is what we would have put.
down In the ship’s journal on October
31, lg.)8. If naval officers were not al
ways afraid of entering mysterious
happening* of that kind. As it was,
we Hlrnplv made the entry that on
October 31st, at half past five In the
afternon, the quartermaster, Slordrel,
fell overboard and his body War not
found, although the Pallmure ,-emalu
ed on the same spot, all night"
