SHARING THE ROYALTIES.
‘‘Let one man stand at my right
hand,” Horatius quoth, quoth he. “Let
one abide at my left side and hold
the bridge with me.”
The foe they smote, and then they
wrote a book and shared the gold.
The Romans were like brothers in the
brave days of old.

OFFICIALS REFUSED AN
EXAMINATION OF BOOKS
Supreme Court Hears Argu
ments In Case of Two Ad
judged In Contempt.
Washington.—Extent of the power
of the courts to examine the books
of corporations was the question
raised in a series of cases before the
supreme court of the United States
today for argument.
William Dreier, secretary of the
Lichenstein Millinery Company of
New York, and Christopher C. Wil
son, president of the United Wireless
Telegraph company, a Maine corpora
tion, have both been declared in con
tempt of court in New York because
they prevented the grand jury from
examining the books of their respec
tive corporations. In the former case
the grand jury was investigating cer
tain alleged violations of the customs
laws. In the latter the grand jury
was inquiring into alleged violation's
of the postal laws.
In each case examination of the
books by the grand jury was refused
on the ground that they might tend
to incriminate. Each man is still
claiming that to compel him to give
up the books would be to interfere
with his constitutional rights not to
testify against -himself.
