CHURCH AND TEMPERANCE
QUESTION DISCUSSED
Ecumenical Conference at To
ronto Has Very Important
Subject Before It. Temper
ance Problem Dominant in
Importance.
Toronto, Canada.—'The church and
temperance ’ was discussed at Satur
day’s pension of the ecumenical Meth
odist conference in this qlty.
Encouragement was expressed by
work' rs from several countries. In
cluding the United States and Can
ada, at the successes of recent con
certed efforts to eradicate or at least
abat< various forms of intemperance.
It was'pointed out, however, that the
evils wrought by drink are still so
widespread And so enervating to na
tions «s to make the temperance prob
lem dominant in Importance.
'(lnis the people’s will can bring
enforcement of liquor laws,’’ said the
Rev* J Alfred Sharp of London, Eng.
The people must be wooed and won.
If they ire not the laws will not be
enforced when we get them.”
In the multlPlleit of clubs, the Rev.
tit a R. Wedgwood, of Be l fast, Ireland,
found a great peril.
There should not be one law for
the Ktloou and another for the club.
It i« the duty of governments, munici
palities and churches to grapple with
the social cause which makes men
drinkers.”
He also said that, according to h!s
observation, fewer women drink now
than a decade apo.
The Rev IV ft. Baker, of Westerville,
superintendent of the National
Anti-Saloon T.eague, said;
"Kvery civilised country Is moving
iKalnst the liquor traffic. Some peo
ple say you cannot make man moral
hy lie. If this kind of reasoning were
allowed, you would have to erpeal all
the laws from the Ten Commandments
to the present. We need liquor legts
lutlon which can be enforced, and,
then, Its enforcement.

FRENCH TRAFFIC RULES
Worn Good Roads.
Two important changes in the road
l.tw of France arc to take effect In
October. The first eliminates the speed
limit for motor cars in the open coun
try. The second makes the “rule of
the road" conform to that of Great
Britain, where vehicles meet on the
left, line reason given for this latter
change is that by it the drivers of
I slow-going vehicles, who in Franco
usually walk on the right side of their
horses, will be brought between the
latter and an overtaking motor car.
thus enabling the driver to control

WHAT KIND OF A MORTGAGE ARE
YOU STRUGGLING UNDER, BROTHER?
Is not n disheartening thing to go
through life under the harrow of debt,
struggling to get release under circum
stances that give no hope of relief? says
Orison Sweet Maisden in Success Mag
azine. Is it not unfortunate to feel that
we can never litt the mortgage from the
home, that in spite of all our efforts it
must finally Thj sold over the heads of
those dearer to us than life itself. But
all this is nothing compared with the
mortgage of vice upon the character
which blights the hie.
Many a man has died without being
able to life the mortgage from nis home,
yet has been a real success, for he kept
his manhood clean, his integrity un
stained and, although he left no ma
terial wealth, he had enriched the lives
of all who knew’ him.
The nicotine mortgage upon your vi
tality. the alcohol mortgage which hard
ens your nerve fiber, benumbs the brain
cells, paralyses the power to achieve and
makes you it slave instead of a king,
are incumbrances compared with which

the mere mortgage upon your home is
a blessing.
If you are mortgaged to the cigarette
habit, which demoralizes your ambition,
poisons your bloods, benumbs your
nerves and vitiates your aim; if you
have a Whiskey mortgage, an Immorality
mortgage on your character which you
have been trying for years to lift, this
is infinitely worse than your chattel
mortgage or real estate mortgage. The
mortgage cn your home may not touch
your real seif. In spite of it you may
be a man. respected, looked up to, ad

may have made every acre of land in
