it to you upon the altar to muke an
Atonement for your souls.” (Leviticus
xvii, 11.) He said:—
All the trend of religious scholarship
in recent years Is away from the Bible
and In line wilh the Evolution theory.
The Bible sets foath that the tirst man
was created perfect, In the Image and
likeness of his Creator, and that when
on trial for life or death everlasting
he was disobedient, and came under
the sentence of death; and that all
trouble, all sin and sorrow, pain and
death, for the past six thousand years,
is the penalty, the result, of that fall
from obedience and harmony with
God. Tlie Bible teaches the necessity
for'an Atonement for sin, and this les
son was shown In the typical sacrifices
of bullocks and ghats, which Israelites
for centuries commemorated, especial
ly upon their Atonement Day, at the
beginning of each year.
Tho Bible and Evolution Opposed.
Evolution claims that man started
as a cousin to tho monkey, and that
instead of falling Into sin and death,
an evolutlou process has been bring
ing him up, up, up to Ids present high
elevation. Thin theory, having no
(Place for sin or n fall, finds, of course,
no place or need for a recovery,
through :> Redeemer, a Savior. The
two theories are absolutely opposed.
Whoever believes (be Darwinian the
ory cannot, logically, he a Christian.
Whoever is a Christian cannot, logical
ly, hold to the Darwin theory. And
yet the pulpits of Christendom ure well
stocked with Higher Critics and Evo
lutionists, nud all of our colleges and
theological seminaries are graduating
others, nil antagonistic to the Bible
and Its presentations. For years the
fight has been conducted on the quiet.
The unbelievers hold iho best and
most Influential pulpits and professor
ships In Christendom, and Insidiously,
craftily, undermine the faith of those
who are paying them their salaries.
It Is time that tho battle between
truth and error should come out Into
the open, because the majority of those
who are being misled do not realize
(he situation until their faith Is entirely
undermined until their minds are so
entrenched In error that the verities
of God’s Word, including the words of
Jesus and the Apostles, have passed
with them into the list of absurdities,
amongst these, tho stories of Jonah
and the whale. Noah and the flood, etc,,
endorsed by Jesus and tbe Apostles.
Higher Criticism Means Higher Infi
delity.
Today every college, every theolog
leal seminary throughout the whole
civilized world, is teaching wliat Is
commonly known as Higher Criticism
of the Bible—though the proper name
for It would he higher infidelity—ln
fidelity amongst the high ones of all
Christendom. These Higher Critics
are doing the same work exactly that
Thomas I’alne and Robert Ingersoll
did, oflly that they are carrying on
their work on a higher plane-appeal
ing not to the gross and tho vile, but
to the refined, intelligent and truth
seeking. As a result their Influence
Is a thousand fold more injurious.
Those to whom Paine and Ingersoll ap
pealed were vegy rarely Christians at
all; hence they destroyed very little
faith they merely made the unbelief
more rank and foul.
But these Higher Critic Infidels of
this "evil day” are making use of all
the vast machinery of Christendom to
all denominations, especially through
theological seminaries, to undermine
and overthrow the fnitli of all who
have named the name of Christ, great
and small, rich and poor, cultured and
Ignorant It Is being done systematic
ally, too, craftily, deceitfully, in a
manner that the masses of the people
would scarcely credit. It Is safe to
say that fully four out of five who
graduate from theological seminaries
of all denominations are Higher Critic
Infidels, who are Instructed that their
main business Is to promote morality
amongst the people, especially to build
up Churcbanlty, particularly their own
denomination, and to gradually,
stealthily, craftily wean the people
from the faith of the Bible to their
higher critical dogmas. And they are
succeeding most wonderfully. A “pes

which really fit.? to this pernicious iD
Alienee.
“Out of Thin# Own Moutn Will I
Judge Thee,”
Said the Lord, and in harmouy with
this we find that in the Lord’s provi
dence these Higher Critics are gradu
ally more and more telling on them
selves. But the nominal Christian Is
quite obtuse, and many of the true
Christians, as the Apostle explains, are
merely “babes In Christ,” unable to
use tbe strong meat of the Word, and
capable only of enjoying or using the
"milk of the Word,” and incapable of
using Its strong meat. Hence the open
declarations of these wolves In sheep's
clothing, who masquerade as sheep,
are not taken seriously. If the sheep
are startled by the words, they are
soothed again by tlie thought that this
Is our kind minister, polished In man
ner and well educated, and he surely
would \>t lend us astray, he surely
would not deceive us. If he had ceased
to believe tbe Bible and become an In
fidel he surely would have left the pul
pit. Poor Innocents!
Blood Atonement For Sin.
Our text refers to a blood-atone
ment for sin. The Law Covenant re
quired the death of a bullock and a
goat, but the repetition of these sac
rifices every year indicated that no
cancellation was effected thereby—
merely a typical covering of sin for a
year. The Law required an eye for
an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a man's
life for a man’s life, which Implies
that a perfect muu must of necessity
die in order to tie the Redeemer of
Adam and the race which shared his
condemnation. The bullock of the sin
offering, therefore, was merely a type
of a better sacrifice. The true sacri
fice wus provided In the death of the
Mun Christ Jesus. He was a man and
yet not a sinful mau, because, al
though born of a woman, His life wuh
from above. Had He received Ills life
from an earthly father, He would
have been a blemished. Imperfect, sin
ful man, and as such could not have
paid the ransom-price for another.
For this cause Ono was chosen to bo
the Redeemer who was “holy, harm
less, undefiled and separate from sin
ners.” And all this because of His
miraculous eoneepl lon.
As in the type Ihe blood of the bul
lock was used to make a ty pica I atone
ment for a year, so in the antitype
the blood of Josua is efficacious to
make atonement for the sltis of the
whole world. In the type an earthly
priest offered the bloofl, In an earthly
tabernacle; in the antitype, He who
became tho Sin-Offering, begotten of
the Holy Spirit, at the time of His
consecratiou, was therefore recognized
as the great Antllyplcal High Priest.
After Ills resurrection He ascended
on high, “to appear in the presence of
God for us”—for the Church—first;
and when the Church shall ho com
pleted, He will appear for the world.
He will seal the New Covenant for
Israel, applicable to all the families
of the earth, through Israel. Then, as
the great Mediator of that New Cov
enant [Jeremiah xxxl, 811. He will,
for a thousand years, reign as King
of earth, the Antitype of Melcttlsedec—
a Priest upon His throne—a Royal
Priest, possessed of the necessary
power to put down sin und to uplift
humanity and perform the function of
instructing and blessing mankind.
To Regain Paradise Lost.
Tbe Paradise lost when Adam sinned
was a miniature one. It Is to be re
stored and to ba world wide in extent.
“God will make His earthly footstool
glorious.” He lihm promised to make
His footstool glorious-“He formed II
not In vain, He formed It to bo In
habited.''—lsaiah lx, lii; Ixvl. 1; xlv, 18,
As the earthly Eden It will he Inhab
ited by its master, man; the restored
earth would be naught without Its
muster restored. And this is the Di
vine provision, that ns by man came
death, sin, sorrow, pain, trouble, by a
man also shall come the resurrection
of the dead, the uplifting of Adam’s
race, mentally, morally, physically, to
human perfection, happiness and ever
lasting life. Earth’s blessings will be
for all except two classes: (1) Those
who love sin and bate righteousness,
after having been brought to a full
•knowledge of both good and evil, will
have no further Divine favor, but will
die the Second Death. (2i The others
who will not get human perfection and
earth’s blessings will be a spiritual
class, a saintly class whom God Is now
selecting from among mankind to be
Dirt co-laborers with Christ in the up
lifting and restitution of humanity.
Unquestionably, the Almighty could
have arranged a plan for dealing with
humanity d Terentiy lie could have
put a different penalty upon Father
Adam. The present arrangement was
made so as to display (1) Divine Jus
tlce, (2) Divine Love, (3) Divine Power,
(4) Divine Wisdom. Man’s fall and
degradation under the death sentence
witnessed to men and to angels tho
downward tendency of sin and Divine
Justice In man's condemnation. Di
vine Love Is manifested in (he work
of redemption. Divine Power will he
manifested, during tbe reign of Mes
siah. In the uplifting of humanity
from Kin and death-the resurrection
of the dead. Divine Wisdom will
finally be seen by all when the great
work of reconciliation and regenera
tlon shall have been effected.
The Life Is In the Blood.
We have always known that In a
very Important sense the life of every
creature Is In its blood, es our text
declares. But we are continually find
ing that tbe Bible contains such a su
perbumnri wisdom that many of Its
statements prow In Importance as our
knowledge Increases. Our text Is no
exception to this rule. Tbe latest find
ings of science are to the effect that
life and nature are more particularly
represented in the blood than in any
other manner
If the theory of Evolution seemed

supported o.v .ur. Darwin's careful la
ter-breeding of his pigeons, we are not
to forget the difficulty he encounter
ed in maintaining his fancy breeds.
The constant tendency appeared to be
to turn back to the original stock. We
are now informed that this is a ruleg
a law of nature, which applies botll
to animal and vegetable life. We are
informed that all such breedings re
turn to tbeir original species in the
third or fourth generation. It Is even
pointed out now that diseases of the
blood proceed no further than tbe
third or fourth generation, and this
most fortunately, otherwise the physi
cal health of humanity might be much
more impaired than it is.
Is not this a direct corroboration of
that Rißle statement which some of us
once thought so ungracious—God’s dec
laration that He would "visit” the sins
of the fathers upon the children, unto
the third and fourth generation?"
(Exodus xx, 5.) It now appears that.
Instead of being a mark of Divine dis
favor, it Is a mark of Divine mercy that
hereditary faint in the blood is limited
to the third or fourth generation. .
A celebrated physician and scientist.
Dr. William Hanna Thomson, promul
gating this theory, said:—
"Professor George H. F. Nut tall, of
the University of Cambridge, took up
the subject and has so extended lts'np
plication that a single drop of blood
from any animal now suffices, not only
to show by Its own peculiar chemical
reactlou what animal It comes from,
but also how nearly related an animal
is by bis blood to other animals. It
begins, therefore, to look as If the
whole classification of roology might
have to he re-arranged according
to these blood tests. Thus a drop
of blood from a walrus shows no rela
tion to a drop of whale’s blood, or the
blood of any other cetacean, such as
seals or porpoises, which, like the wal
rus, are mammals that have taken tot
tho sen.”
We may be sure that those who hold
fast te the teachings of the Bible will
come out on the right side of the argu
ment in the long run. The endeavoo
of worldly-wise men to get away from
God’s book has led many of them tat
extremes of thought, and of statement,
which some day will be fully rectified
to their shame, said Pastor Russell.
Tbe Bible foretells this, saying, “The
wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the understanding of their prudent
meu shall be hid.” (Install nix. 14>
Bt. Paul refers to science, falsely so
called, which will ultimately be proven
entirely wrong.
Complete Sin-Atonement.
For nearly six thousand years the
reign of slu and death has prevailed.
It la nearly two thousand years since
the Iledoemer came to give His Ufa us
mau's redemption price, yet still the
ralgn of sin and death continues. It Is
not because tho blood of Christ was
Insufficient to satisfy the claims of
Justice for the sins of the world, but
because, before the merit of the blood
of Christ could bo given to Adam and
his race, it must have a previous use.
That uso has been In progress for the
past eighteen centuries, during which
it has been the basis of the Church’s
Justification by faith.
There Is a difference between the
Church's falth-Jusllflcatlon of this Age,
and the world’s actual Justification, to
be accomplished In tbs next Aga. The
world will actually get restitution to
bumun life and Its privileges, earthly
dominion, etc. All that Adam had and
lost, si) that Jesus redeemed, will be
given to Adam and his race to have
und to hold as theirs forever.
Rut, meantime, the merit of Christ’s
blood or sacrifice Is used In the inter
est of “the Church of the First-bora.’’
The earthly, natural rights will not bei
given to the Church, for she Is to
bHvo “some better thing"—a heavenly.
Inheritance with her Lord and a par
ticipation in His spirit nature. Tha
Redeemer's merit is Imputed to tha
Church, to cover the Imperfection and
weakness of each one called and
drawn of the Father to membership!
In tho Bride of Christ. The differ
ence between a gift and en Imputation
Is manifest—an Imputation signifies
merely a loon, an assistance. Thus
the merit of Christ, Imputed to thoaai
who would become His Elect Chore h,
covers their blemishes so that they,
may present their bodies living sac
rifices, holy and acceptable to God; as
footstep followers of Jesus— as partic
ipants with Him In His spirit ns turd
and In an attainment of the heavenly
nature.
Thus It will be seen that since the
entire world lost life and all Its privi
leges through the disobedience of
Adam, ail of these may be fully re
covered from their Inherited disaster,
through tbo Redeemer, because His
life was glveD—figuratively, His blood
was shed—“the Just for the unjust," ee
the great Sin-Atonement for the world.
Atonsment For tho Soul.
Tn our text the word tout la a
synonym for perenn or being, Father
Adam was n human soul, a human
being, so also bis children. He alone,
however, had a standing before Jus
tice. Me alone was perfect, he alone
was on trial, and through hla disobe
dience and fall his children are In
volved. Jesus was, originally, a spirit
being, personality or soul, the Logo*.
He liecnmn a partaker of flesh and
blood; He was not, previously, a hu
man soul, hence It was that It was
necessary for Him to lay aside tha
glory of fils higher nature or order of
being and become a human soul, "that
He, by the grace of God, might tasta
death for every man.” (Hebrews 11,
0.) He gave His blood. His life, a
Ransom for nil. and thus we see tha
fulfilment of our text the exhibition
of Divine favor nod love with the re
sultant blessing to the world, during
Meusiah’s reign, and the blessing and
exaltation of the Church, which musl
precede.
