NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans —Cotton futures opened
steady at a decline of RalO points. Cables
were disappointing and the weather map
was considered remarkably good for this
time of the year. There was much -week
end covering on the short side as soon
as the market opened but there was
more fresh short selling based apparent
ly on reports from the Interior that the
crop was still being picked and ginned
In record time and that the spot uemand
showed no improvement. Spot houses
were among the heaviest sellers. At the
end of the first half hour of trading
pr*ces were 13ad-l points under yester
day's close and at new low' levels for
the season.
The market had a -weak undertone all
the morning and prlc.ee sagged slowly
hut steadily without showing any decid
ed signs of reacting even when week end
realizing; of profits by the bear side be
came heavy. It was rumored that two
or more leading operators on the short
side were closing out their lines, leaving
their following to keep the decline go
ing. This rumor dud not help the mar
ket In the least. At the lowest prices
were 17 to ’1 points under yesterday's
last Quotations.
The market closed steady at a net de
cline o-f 17 to 21 points.

NEW YORK COTTON
New York—Recent Wenrish predictions
of nine- cents so-r cotton materialized to
today’s market, when both October and
onuaxy contracts Sold at that level
while every month on the list made new
low records under continued heavy
southern offerings and continued local
pressure. The close was steady but only
a point or two up from the lowest at a
net decline of from 12 to 21 points.
The market opened steady at a* d>e
elino of 5a9 points on response to lower
Liverpool cables. There was some trade
buying around the initial figures and
profit taking by shorts was extremely
heavy but rallies of 4 or 5 points were
quickly succeeded by renewed weakness
and in the late trading prices sold off*
to a net loss of 14 and 18 points on the
active positions. Business was very ac
tive for a Saturday, with the continued
good weather in the South, suggesting
big receipts at interior points today and
the probability of heavy southern hedges
selling against them at the opening of
the market here on Monday morning un
doubtedly inspired much of the local
pressure. Private cables attributed the
decline in Liverpool to liquidation by dis
appointed buyers owing to continued free
offerings and while comparatively few
private reports were received hene dur
ing the morning from the southern mar
kets, the heavy southern selling was
taken as reflecting continued favorable
weather conditions in the Anterior There
were indications around the ring that
some recent strong local buyers were
liquidating on the decline and It was
claimed that old shorts who had covered
above 8 1-2 cents were putting out their
cotton again around the nine cent level.
Houses with southern connections and
spot houses were particularly heavy sel
lers here just before the close and the
broker of a leading spot interest was the
first to sell January contra-cts at 9 cents
representing a decline of 478 points In
the high price reported by high prices
reached by January deliveries last June
and a break of about 267 points since
the eighth of September.

MARKET LETTERS
6LACK & BURRUB COTTON LETTER
Auguata, Qa. —January contracts in
New York closed last Saturday afternoon
at just sixty points over the close to
night. This decline represents a of
active selling of spots and a correspond
ing amount of speculative selling on he
part of those that believe in lower prices
From the stand potfnt of statistics the
market at the present moment could
not possibly present more helpless front.
Wo are now' in the period of the maxi

This represents the supply equation in

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET
New York —Prices, of virtually all the
active stocks rose from 1 to 2 points
today. The market displayed more con
sistent strength than on any previous
ctay for several weeks. The list ad
vanced steadily under ihe influence of
an active demand from the opening of
trading to the close. There was furth
er evidence of short covering but that
the demand did not come In the main
from tins source was indicated by the
bnettdth of the movement, a large num
ber of the less prominent issues shar
ing in the advance with the specula
tive favorites. Although public par
ticipation in the market is still email
there whs evidence today of an Increas
ing outside inuarest.
The several securities of the Ameri
can Tobacco company were again ac
tive and bonds developed some heavi
ness. The recent rise in the four per
cent bonds is accepted as pi oof »hat
the original reorganiation plans of the
company have undergone modifications.
Additional details of the plan as It
slands at present were made known and
had much io do with bringing in buying
orders.
The demand for stocks was supple
mental to tne increased activity in bonds
during the week. Bond dealers said
that the pressure of idle funds await
ing investment was making itself felt in
the heavier sales and rising prices and
that this activity had been extended to
the more conservative investment etocks.
The bonds were irregular. United
States 3s advanced 1-8 on call on the
week.

Chicago, lll*.—Wheat 65 cars, with 22
of contract grade; corn 286 car*, with
54 of contract grade; oats 211 car*. o
tal receipts of wheat at Chicago, Min
neapolis and Duluth today were 679 cars,
compared with 876 car* last week and
5H car* the corresponding day a year
ago.
Chicago—Confronted by prospects of
additional big increase of the visible sup
ply the wheat market today turned weak
The close was l-bal-4 to 3-8 c under last
night. Corn declined 3-Sal-2 to 1-2 net
and oats 1-8 to 1-4. Provisions closed
from unchanged to 5 cents advance.
Receipts of wheat were large not only
in the United Stales but also across the
Canadian line.
Fair weather predictions led many
longs to reduce their holdings of corn
and this resulted In weakness.
Oats ruled a trifle steadier titan oth
er grain.
Provisions trailed upward after hogs.
With another good sized increase
expected in the visible supply, wheat
seemed inclined to sag The open
ing was 1-8 a 1-4 lower to l-Bal-4 up. De
cember started at 99 1-8 to l-Bal-4, a
loss of a shade to 1-8 and fell to 98 7-8
a 99.
Corn eased off despite the wet weath
er. December opened unchanged to 1-8
down at 64 l-2a5-S to 64 5-Ba3-4 ana de
clined to 64 1-2.
A little speculative buying gave oats
an upturn. December started the same
as last night at 47 7-8 and advanced to
47 7-Ba4B.
Lightness of offerings made provisions
firm. Initial sales were at last nigh ’s
level to 7 1-2 higher with January de
liveries 1530 for pork, 880 for lard and
795 for ribs.
Wheat closed 8-8 net lower at 9S 7-S
'*■>- i -ecemher.
Corn closed 1-2.h5-8 net lower for De
