Y. M. C. A. OF AUGUSTA WILL
ORGANIZE TROOP BOY SCOUTS
Already Two Troops In the City. What the Motto of the Boy
Scouts is. Mr. Hunter Talks of Scouts In Philadelphia.
The V. M. C. A. of this city -will
organize a traop of Boy Scouts at an
aarly date. The hoy members of the
association arc enthusiastic about the
movement to form a troop of Boy
Scouts among them. It will be an
additional faature to the Y. M. C. A.
here and an attractive one. It is the
lntantien es the Y. M. C. A. authori
tles te get tba troop argmnlsed as soon
as possible.
There are already two troops of
Boy Scouts ia Augttata, one with th#
First Prasbytarian Sunday school of
which Rav. Jeaaph R. Sevier ie th#
Scout Master, and the other with the
Church of th* Good Shepherd, on th*
Hill, as vhleh Rev. G. Croft ’William*
t* th# Scout Uastir. When the third
troop is formed with the Y. M. C. A.
boys the troops are then eligible to
have a council eompneed of the Scout
Matters aad an advisory Scout Mas
ter.
Mr. W. M. Hunter, secretary of the
local Y. M. C. A., said that there are
something like 19,*99 bey scouta in
Philadelphia, where he has been in
the T. M. C. A. work, and that he
was an advisory Scout Master and
was interested in th# work es the boy
scouts. He believes that it will be
a great benefit to the Y. M. C. A. and
MR. E. 8. PILCHER
!S SUPERINTENDENT
Named by County Oommitaion
ers Wednesday Mernin; to
Succeed the Late Mr. W. J.
Kenning.
1 "
Mr. E. B. Pilcher, for some years
connected with the postal department
es the United States government, was
selected as superintendent of the
Richmond County Home, at a special
meeting of the board of county com
missioners Wednesday morning at 10
o’clock.
Mr. Pilcher is to fill the vacancy
caused by th* death of Mr. Wm. J.
Henning. He was elected subject to
the rule of the board to dispense witn
his services whenever they saw fit; a
rule that applies to all alike. He is
to recatva th# same salary of SI,OOO
per annum.
Th# nomination of Mr. Pilcher was
mad* by Mr. G. H. Nixon and sec
onded by Mr. Asa Rooks. There were
no other nominations.
Among other applicants were: Ru
dolph Baldewski. J. W. Keenan from
Carasota, Fla., Ben. P. Whittle, O. H.
Muagrov*. J. W. Monahan, J. W. Phil
lips. Hermann H. Oellerieh, L. Young
blood, H. J. Britt and L. M Miller.
The matter of re-instating Mr. L.
D. Morgan es th# county joiiee wa«
taken up, but upon motion was car
ried ever to th* rogfular meeting on
the first Tuesday in November. The
probable outcome is that Mr. Morgan
will be returned to tho county stock
ade as guard and the county policed
by two men instead of three.
Other matters of lesser importance
were carried over to the November
meeting.
ated, indeed, not to be within grasp of many op
portunities to work.
The meat remarkable feature of tha situation, however, is that the
exceptions to this rula are almoat entirely to be discovered among the
uneducated elaiees. It i» far eaaier for a man worth 320 a -week to g; J t.
it than it ia for one worth |6 a week to get that. In other words, tha
great demand of the hour is for educated people.
The manager es rae of the world's largest employment bureaus said
to me tha other day, “Wo eorae iito communication with both the em
ployer and the employe. Tha uniform rul* is that the employers who
need eur gerrlces are thoee whe are looking for high-grade help, while
the employes who eeme to ui most often for assistance are those who
are iucnpable of holding reeponaible position* on account, chiefly, of a
lack of education. If we fell to bring employera and men together,
which la not at common nowadays a* it was 10 or 12 years ago, it U
htoauoe the applicant gees not poiaeta the necessary education.”
The call far help ia loudest where it Is hardest to make men hear.
If you want a hundred naen to work at ordinary labor for 32 a day , it
is simply usosssary to put s three-line want ad in a big city pape | red
200 men who can answer your requirements will be at your door within
an hour after the paper has been issued, it you want one man to take
charge of a big engineering job at 315,000 a year, you may have to look
a long time before you find him. Expensive me Q who are worth the
money are hard to find.
The reason for this peculiar situation is that most men and women
do not realize the value of education, especially business education, un
til they believe it to be too late for it to be secured; and then, instead
of attempting to mend matters by study, they simply fold their hand*
and give up the ghost, so far as learning is concerned.
It is the ability to h*ar the “call for help” that comeg constantly
from thos* who »re looking for the higher class of helpers which dis
tinguishe* the ambitious vouns p?rso n from the one who is doomed to
failure in later life. If the boy and girl, young man and woman, of to
day is able to hear this call a few years in advance. ' ' vet ft for it,
success will be the sure result.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER
there is no question about it being a
benefit to the boys who arc members.
The Boy Scouts, unlike any mili
tary organization, is a wood craft or
der and the work mainly teaches the
boy to “be prepared." It enables
him to look out for himself and in
teaching these things it does not tire
him in uninteresting work bus in
stead gives him the proper training to
