STEEL BRIDGES 111

Mr. Fred Pope, Chairman of

Concrete.
Immediately before the adjourn
ment of the special meeting of the
county commissioners Wednesday,
Mr. Frederick Ball Pope, chairman of
the committee Ojj roads and bridges,
asked to be heard concerning the ap
propriation of the $5,000 allowed an
nually for the construction of con
crete bridges In the county.
After consulting many specialists
on the subject, and observing that the
custom In New York state. New Jer
sey, Delaware and Pennsylvania,
through which Mr. Pope traveled the
past summer, he stated that he fad
reached the decision that the steel
eye-beam bridge was fHr superior 10
the concrete. Hl* consultations
brought this more forcefully out. The
concrete has not the durability of the
steel structure.
So far none of the $5,000 has been
spent, and (he commissioners express
ed (heir pleasure that It had not, been
needlessly spent If after Mr. Pope's
Investigation the concrete proved In
ferior to the steel structure.
The plan afoot now is to span the
waters of Ihe county with the steel
eye-beam und floor the bridges with
wood blocks, soaked In creosote. The
plan will undoubtedly he carried out,
and Richmond county’s roads and
bridge will he ranked with the finest

Dr. J. H. Honan, of Bad-Nanhelm,

to look after the completion of his

rangements for the Bad-Nanheim
baths which he will give during the
winter.
The baths are celebrated, perhaps
among the finest In the world. A
trana-contlnental trip is not an un
usual affair for those suffering from
hardening of the arteries, etc. Dr.
Honan has ordered shipped five tons
of the salt for the baths, and he will
have accommodations for 12 baths at
a time. There will, of course, be a
large retinue of attendants, etc.,
though the actual supervision of the
baths will be under Dr. Honan.
Dr Honan, having travelled the
greater part of America, selected
Augusta ss the ideal winter rosnrt,
purchased land on the Hill and has
begun the erection of his home. The
fact that so great a specialist should
have selected the' climate of Augusta
Is another decision of great men In
her favor. Dr. Honan will bring a
number of his patients to the Augus

DYSPEPSIA PROOF
How Any Meal Can Be Thoroughly En

Costs You Nothing to Try Stuart's
Dyspepsia Tablets.
Men. as a rule, are first discovered
by their enemies. Their antagonists
turn on the searchlight, and the proof
of merit will lie in being able to stand
the flash.
It was only in this way that Mr.
White ever knew that dyspepsia was
one of Mr. Black’s worst enemies. Sit
ting face to face at a two-by four
table, he handed his afflicted friend
the bill of fare:
Oyster Cocktail. Stuffed Olives.
Boston Clam Chowdep.
Strained Gumbo.
Sirloin Steak with Mushrooms.
Boiled Ox Tongue with Sauerkraut.
Lobster a la Newburg.
Baked Pork and Beans.
Combination Crab Salad.
Hot Mince Pie.
Pineapple Fritters.
Mr White ordered a "little of each.”
Mr. Dyspepsia Black ordered crackers
and a glass of milk. “I had such a
big breakfast this morning," he said,
“that I’ll just take a bite to keep
you company.” But Mr. White could
not be deceived: ”1 am afrail you
can't stand the gleam, Mr. Black. Why
don't you say you have dyspepsia and
be done with It? You'll always have
that hungry look anyhow as long as
you have dyspepsia. Now listen. My
stomach was in Just as bad condition
as yours at one time. But now I can
cat anything, at any time. For instance,
this clam chowder or sirloin steak or
even the lobster would be just as w el
come to my stomach as your crackers
and milk. You don't realize how this
dyspepsia business is robbing you of
your spirit, of your energy and ability
to think quickly. I can’t help notice
it You haven't the cheer and so
ciability you had three months ago.
Now I'll tell you what to do." and
tiiereat the cheerful Mr. White took a
vial from his pocket and extracted a
wee tablet. “There, there is a tablet
that contains an ingredient, ohe grain
of which digests 3,000 grains of food.
For even the worst dyspeptic It's the

| Not only would annexation increase

pay for water mains that pass our
' doors, unless we use them. We do
!not pay for sewers laid in the streets
by our places. We do not have to
pay for sidewalks or pavements. All
these items have to be paid for by
residents of the city in addition to
the exorbitant taxes, and will have
to be paid for by us if we come into
the city. We do not want to raise
our taxes two-thirds, and then pay
additional for any possible benefit we
may get. This may be sentiment, but
it sounds to us like business.

Into Augusta.
The fate of Summerville, whether
she will become a part of the incor

before, a separate corporations with
separate administrations and depart

The polls open at 10 o'clock and
close at 4 o'clock. The freeholders,
appointed to manage the election are:
A. S. Morris, A. K Rowland and H.
H. Gumming.
The voting will be fast. There are
40S voters registered, which will re
duce the voting to something like 68
an hour, more than one a minute. The
ballots are marked: "For Annexa
tion” and "Against Annexation.”
Voters are urged to visit the polls
early. In order that all votes shall
be cast, it will be necessary that
voters visit the polls early. A de
fay is above all thing not wanted.
The annexation party still claims
victory by a good majority. A sys
tematic, through more or less quiet,
plan of canvass has been done on
certain parts of the Hill and a gen

made. The result is pleasing to the
annexationists who are as confident
of the victory today as they were
when the plan was proposed the sec
