DOES EUROPE SURPASS AMERICA

and North America, and the North
American boy or girl, who believca
that their voices warrant them in
attempting to qualify for opera, need
not stifle -their ambition because
they cannot afford a course under
Kuropean teachers. While the
music teachers and schools of Europe

one may gel as thorough training as

with these are somewhat different

European ronfreres and are more in
accord with the temperaments of the
New World public. The differences
between the American and European

are capable of holding their own

Still, it must not be Imagined that

training of a voice Is the same the
world over. It Is an expensive and
a more or less exhausting process.
It calls for money or muscle, also
Infinite patience and a genuine affec

Singers must likewise remember
that It takes public life to ripen their
powers. Even the concert stage has

CARUSO’S BASB DRUMMING
DELIRIOUS.
(FYnm The New York Sun.)
Enrico Caruso beat a bass drum
with (treat virtuosity and glee at the
Metropolitan Opera House. As a fa
mous musician once wrote of a drum
mer, his rub was ecstatic, Ihls dub
thrilling, and his rub-a-dub delirious.
It may well be questioned whether
any other living tenor can perform on
the bass drum with such stupendous
technic and eloquent emotion.
It Is, therefore, no wonder people
rushed In regiments to the opera
house last night when “Pagllacci”
was once more presented. Of course
"Cavalllera Kustieana” was also giv
en, and several other singers of Im
portance appeared, but the only Ca
ruso was the only bass drummer.
The quality of his tone—but why go
further? Mr Caruso also sang and
his delivery of "Rldl, Pagllacci, ’’ stir
red up quite as much enthusiasm as
his drumming.
