During this particular time of the year It is timely, we
feel, to mention Durban's Velvet Lotion for the face.
t
This is made from a formula which I know to be right.
The lotion represents the highest possible perfection in
successfully combining harm less Ingredients in such propor
tions that tlm soothing, cleansing, skin-nourishing, invigor
ating, all-satisfying effect of this lotion endures or lasts.
In this it differs from many of the so-called face lotions,
which simply give a pleasant effect which is hut momen
tarily, and not lasting.
I personally recommend the use of Durban's Velvet Lo
tion and offer the suggestion that those going away should
carry a “‘round trip” supply, so that they will not forego
the pleasure of using It regularly.
To the stay-at-homes, I also mention that the dust and
wind and atmospheric changes of the city are as harmful to
Milady's fair skin, and that no woman or miss should be
without her bottle of Durban’s Velvet Lotion for constant
use.

Washington.—President Wilson Us

an antl-tlpping law lor the Panama

employes from receiving rebates or
commissions on supplies it prohibits
gifts intended to influence any em

It is entitled an order “To prevent
the corrupting influence of agents or

The order attracted much attention
in view of the fact that Colonel Goe

The Play Last Night
“A fool there was and he made hirf
prayer," etc. When one thinks of Bella
Donna his mind inevitably turns to
Kipling. All literature furnishes hut
few equals of the principal character
in Robert Hichens' great book. Sa
lome, who insisted on having the head
of John the Baptist brought to her on
a platter, probably equalled Bella Don
na, but there was never a character
that planned with more heartless pre
cision, with a more ruthless purpose
and with a greater abandon of con
science than this same Bella Donna.
With the role portrayed by an actress
of less attainments than Madame Naz
imova we would shudder at the result.
The part Is a hard one and requires
an artiste of the most superior at
tainments, such as is found in the cel
ebrated Russian who is one of the
world's greatest emotional actresses.
Her feline like tread, her snake like
charm for man, her wonderful grace of
movement and her eyes and voice all
contribute toward making her a most
dangerous menace to unprotected men
who are extremely weak at best when
any fascinating woman sets a snare
for them. As Madame told her Egypt
ian lover, “Men kill for me In Eng
land,” or words to that effect.
There are two great characters in
the play, in the opinion of the wlter.
One ia, of course, the vampire herself.
Those who have read the book and
who also saw the play recognized a
very great difference in the two.
Readers of the hook expected the
"vampire to vamp” a great deal more
tfian she did, or In other words tho
character as portrayed on the stage
did not quite measure up In heinous
ness to the Bella Donna of the novel
There are some who say that Nazi
mova did not show that great emotion
at critical moments which might have
been expected of her. Yet, to those
critics wo would Immediately ask who
should set the standard for emotional
acting? Naziinova is the recognized
star in that line. Who would essay
the task of informing Richard Mans-
Held, Hothern or Julia Marlowe that In
their Hhakesperean roles they are not
acting the parts right?
The only possible ground for rensure
is that Nazlmova may not have been
given as good a vehicle as she might
have been given. »
In addition to Nazlmova there Is one
other character in the show who stands
out conspicuously. Mr Charles Bryant
