ASK COAAPEETIDN
CAPITOL FRIEZE
Representative Smith Would
Have Grant and Lee Depicted
Clasping Hands at Appomat
tox.
Washington.—lt seems likely, says a
special to the Atlanta Journal, that
congress will make an appropriation
during the present session to complete
tike frieze around the rotunda of the
capitol. A plan for the doing of this
work has been submitted in the form
of a Joint resolution drafted by Rep
resentative Addison T. Smith, of Idaho,
and it is viewed with favor by a good
many of the house and senate lead-
| In order to complete the broken, or
uncompleted, circle of frescoed Amer
ican achievements, Mr. Smith would
provide a "suitable design by an Am
erican artist of national reputation,
representing Grant azid I.ee shaking
| hands at Appomattox, symbolizing the
! prest nation of the Union and a re
united country, and another represent
j ing the Panama canal in operation.”
Mr. Smith would turn the matter
over to a commission headed by the
I Vice president and the speaker of the
| house, authorizing it to pass upon de
signs 'and to order the completion of
the work. The cost would be small,
and the resolution limits to SIO,OOO.
For 25 Year*.
For a quarter of a century the frieze
i on the wall of the rotunda of the eapl
‘ to), representing scenes In the history
of the continent, has remained In an
1 unfinished condition. The work was
j suspended in May, 1889, because de
i signs representing suitable historical
[ scenes had not heen determined upon,
1 and since thrn nothing has been done.
The last scene in the unfinished
I frieze represents the discovery of gold
I In California in 1848.
The frieze Is sixty-five feet above
i the rotunda floor and Is in imitation
jof high relief. America is depicted
I with Indian and eagle, standing with
History, who records on her tablets
the progress of events. The subjects
are: Landing of Columbus, Cortez and
Montezunm in the Temple of the Bun.
1 Plzarrn in Peru, Burial of De Boto,
Itescue of Captain John Smith, I/and
ing at Plymouth Rock, Penn’s Treaty
with the Indians, Settlement of New
England, Oglethorpe and the Musco
gee, Battle of Lexington, Declaration
of Independence, Surrender of Lord
I Cornwallis, Death of Tecumseh, the
. American Army Entering the City of
, Mexico, and Discovery of Gold In Cali
i fomla.
Representative Smith feels certain
I that Grant and Leo and the Panama
! canal would be fitting subjects for the
t completion of the frieze.
