FRENCH GOVERNMENT
TRIES GOLD BRICK
Scheme Might Have Been a
Success if the Regie Hadn’t
Let Cigarette Tips Get Damp.
Paris—The French government
has gone Into the gold brick business
or rather It has gone into It, but buy
ing now been "sold,” It has gone out
of It again.
My American readers are perhaps
aware we are blessed here with a
government monopoly in matches and
tobacco. Ab a result the Grench
smokers' language Is as shocking as
I am told Is that of the American
golf .player. Not content with giv
ing us matches, the majority of which
are absolutely fireproof and ctAA I '-
ettes either as hard as sticks or as
soft as down, cigars that need hair
pin operations before they will draw
any tobacco containing alien frag
ments of all kinds from cockroaches
to brickbats, the Regie recently f. led
to palm off copper tips ft>r gold.
Gold Bricks.
This gold brick Scheme might have
been a great success If the Regie
had only used ordinary care, but It
let its cigarettes get damp and the
tips began to run with the result that
splotches of verdigris mottled the
paper and complaints began to pour
In from smokers who did not desire
to be poisoned ever to add to the In
come of the government. The Regie
at first, with Its usual callousness paid
no attention but finally had to admit
that Its gold tips were made from
copi or after an official doctor had as
sured them that copper tips were per
fectly harmless. In the future, how
ever, the tips are to be made from
real gold which will mean a decrease
In the annual revenue of the Regie ol
at least 815,000.

them. The greatest favor in the up
life of the world today has been the
mission work of the church of Jesus
Christ. Dr. Williams will tell of this
Sunday night.

Chance to Co-operate In Lord’s Work.
In presenting the Photo-Drama here
tills atlprnoon Pastor Russell stated
Hint nio motive of the enterprise Is
purely philanthropic; that the move
ment Is supported by voluntary con
trlbutlons only, and that the world
wide campaign will progress as rnpld
ly ns the Lord’s providences will per
mit. This Is not a solicitation, he
said. We never solicit! We merely
state the facta und thus give opportu

as little iis they may desire.
In his sermon In the forenoon Pastor
Itussell discussed that feature of the
Photo-Drama which relates to Christ’s
promise. "Behold, I make all things
new!” Hln text and discourse follow:
“Behold. I make all things new."
(Revelation 21:5.) He said:
The Bible'lntimates that the seven
days of the ordinary week are typi
cal of seven great Days, euch a
thousand years long. Thus HI. Pe
ter declares tliar, a Day with the Lord
Is as a ffiousand years. At. the begin
nlng of man's Week ho was perfect,
ns represented In Father Adam: blit
disobedience to the Creator brought
upon him the curse, “Dying, thou shall
die.” Under that curse onr race has
been steadily going downward mental
ly, morally and physically to the tomb
-the Bible llell-Bheol, Hade*.
Man Alona Cannot Conquar.
Meantime, mankind has struggled
against the curse, but to no avail. To
day our race Is assailed by more ail
ments and weaknesses, mental, mural
and physical, than were ever known
before. Our Jails, penitentiaries, asy
luma, hospitals, all hear testimony to
this fact. Even the morals of the
world are apparently nt ns low a state
as could well he Imagined, after all
our preaching, after all our manufac
ture of hobgoblins, devils, and hells
to frighten humanity and thus to drive
them to church, to religion, to morality.
Is It not time that we should ac
knowledge our failure and cry to God
for help ere we perish iis a race? Not
only have wo not converted the lien
then world, but we find the civilized
world retrograding, nnd statistics show
us that crimes Increase on every
hand In sjdte of the preaching of
eternal torture. Surely we may well
gpy. "We have wrought no righteous
ness In tho earth." "We have done
those things which we ought not to
have done and left undone those things
which we ought to have done; and
there Is no health in us.”
Man's Extremity It God’* Opportunity.
While we were crying to the AI
mighty for IDs compassion and aid we
heard Mis Message, lie assures us
that He Inld help upon One mighty to
save to the uttermost all who accept
His aid. It Is this Savior who eighteen

Alas, many have taken the mlsrep
renentatlons of God's diameter In lln
creeds of the Dark Ages too literally!
The result Is that many have gone to
Insane asylums. Others have been
driven away from God to pleasure or
to sin. In their endeavor to forget Him.
Others have been mnde very unhappy
ns they thought of friends and neigh
born, kind and good, who have made
no profession of walking In Jesus'
footsteps. Allis, that we should have
so misunderstood our great Creator's
ehnracter and Plan! Although we did

and temerity.
Christendom’* Great Miataka.
Gradually Christendom fell Into the
great mistake of disregarding God's
Word nnd believing Satan's lie, as the
heathen do. God declared that the
wages of sin would he death the ex
tlnetlon of life. Satan contradicted
this nnd falsified to Mother Eve. assur
ing her that there would he no death
penalty. Satan and Ills fallen angels
have Insidiously sought to perpetuate
his lie by telling us that when our
friends nppenr to die they really he
come more alive than before, lu a-'
coptlng their testimony we have been
doing what the Apostle cautioned us
against- giving heed to seducing spir
its and doctrines of demons. —1 Timo
thy 4:1.
Ba Not Deceived—‘‘The Wages of Sin
la Death.”
The evil spirits have seduced Chris
tendoni, as they have seduced the en
tire heathen world-by giving feigned
communications between the dead nnd
the living. Satan and Ids demon host
have full knowledge of all the affairs
of biimnnlty. It Is an easy matter for
them, therefore, to personate the dead,
and through spirit mediums, witches
and wizards, plnuehettea, tipping ts
bles. writing pencils, visions nnd
dreams, to represent them oa still
alive.
The heathen Indeed are exrusnhle for
falling Into fliese seductive snares; for
the heathen have no revelation from
God and no warning against these evil
spirits. But how shall we excuse our
selves, to whom God committed the
Oracles of Truth, which clearly tell us
that the soul that siiiucjh shall die,
that, the dead know not anything, that
there Is neither wisdom nor knowledge
nor device In Sheol, Hades, the tomb,
whither all are going!
Do not the Scriptures tell us that
these demons, not content with se
ducing us from the Truth nnd toacli
Ing us doctrines of devils which dis
honor our Creator, go further than
this nnd. wherever tsmslbie. possess
poor humanity, dispossessing the bu
man will and acting through the hu
man body? Did not Jesus nnd the
Apostles deal with such possessed per
sons, cnstlng out demons? How strange,
therefore, that we should have forgot
ten all these lessons nnd taken Hatan
for our Instructor! How strange that
we should believe the unreuseuelde lie
and disbelieve the real testimony of
God, that the wages of sin Is death,
and that the soul that slnneth It shall
die!
Blind end Deaf We Were.
Even when we had In our hands the
Word of the Lord we made It of none
effect by believing Satan's lie. When
we read In the Scriptures that the
wicked shall perish, that nil the wick
ed will God destroy, we were hoodooed
by the seducing spirits Into Interpret
ing perish and destroy to mean ever
lasting life In torment. It Is a wonder
that a Christian hope could die held at
nil under such an avalanche of error!
Those who triumphed down through
the Age. we may lie aure, were upheld
by the precious promises of God's
Word, which negatived their fenra and
led them often to say, Alas, we do
not understand It; but we trust the
Lord, that He will do right.
Now, as the dawning light of the
New Dispensation Increases, we per
celve more clearly where our mistake
was. Bible students the world over
are beginning a fresh study of God's
Word In Its own light, nnd are receiv
ing the oil of Joy Instend of the spirit
of heaviness. Now they see the Res
urrection Hope, and perceive that It is
based upon the fact that Christ died
for all; that the First Resurrection will
be for the saintly few who have fol
io wed the Master’s footsteps: that it
will be to a higher than human nature
—to the Divine nature; and that these
glorified ones will be sharers la Mes
slah’s Kingdom, which Is to bless the
world.
Now they see that the world's bless
ing also will be a resurrection, but to

The Master's dcrlaratlc£ that He

Is the equivalent of the message given
us by HI. Peter. He declared that
"times of refreshing shall come." the
opposite of the curse. He declared that
then would come "Times (or years] of
lleatltilth all the things which Qtd
lias spoken by the mouth of all His
holy Prophets since the world began."
Other Scriptures show us that those
Times, or years, of Restitution will be
one thousand. In other words, they
will cover the entire Seventh Day.—
Acts 3:11123.

New Heavens and New Earth.
Iff the symbolic language of the Bi
ble the heavens are sometimes used to
represent the spiritual powers—the
church; and tho earth to represent
civil and social organization. The Bi
ble represents that the present heavens
and earth are out of accord with the
Divine purposes, nnd are to pass away
with u great commotion.
We understand this to mean that In
the end of tills Age the nominal church
systems and till the ecclesiastical pow
ers of the world will fall Into confu
sion, disruption, and pass away. Hpeed
lljr will follow slndlnr conditions In the
soelul and political earth. It also* will
pass away with great commotion, con
fusion. This destruction Is symbolical
ly railed lire. But the Lord has prom
ised a new heavens nnd a new earth —
established along better lines and prin
ciples -In full accord with the Divine
will. In this, we read, righteousness
will dwell.-2 Peter 3:7. 12, 13
The new heavens will not be the
church nominal. It will consist of
Christ nnd the elect Church, gathered
out of all the nations and denomina
tions saints. It will be the very Ideal
of righteousness, the Divine Ideal, and
will be given the control of mankind
for a thousand years. Gradually dur
ing those thousand years a new earth
will develop—society will be organized
under new conditions—ln harmony with
the regulations of Messiah’s Kingdom.
This Is another picture of bow our Re
deemer as tile glorious King will
all things new.
The Grandeur of the New.
God through the Prophet declares,
“Be ye glad and rejoice In that which
I create.” "For, behold, I create new
heavens and a new earth; nnd the for
mer hIihII not he remembered, nor come
Into mind.’’ (Isaiah (15:17, IS) So far
superior In every way will be the New
Dispensation that none will even think
of making a comparison or calling to
mind tho things of the present time
ex cept by way of remembering the les
sons, experiences, etc., learned under
the present sad conditions of the groan
ing creation.
Tlie new creation will be gradual,
not sudden The entire thousand years
of Messiah's Kingdom will be neces
sary for the perfecting of the fallen
race, the establishment of God's will
on earth on the same absolute plan
that now dominates In Heaven. As
there Is neither crying, sighing, nor
dying In Heaven, because there Is nei
ther sin uor death penalty there, so It
will be on enrt.h. There will be no
crying, sighing or dying nnd no sin
here, because sin, with all Its dire ef
fects. will be thoroughly purged sway
by the Messianic Kingdom, In Its up
lifting work of a thousand years. All
the wilfully wicked will be destroyed.
-Psalm 145:20; 2 Peter 2:12.
The glories of the perfect condition
are beautifully represented to us In the
words of our Savior, when He tells ns
that after all of the humnn family
shall have been brought out of sin. Im
perfection. ignorance and superstition
back to full perfection, and all tbs
disobedient destroyed In the Second
Death, then every creature In Heaven
and In earth shull be heard saying,
"Praise and honor nnd dominion and
might !•* unto Him that sltteth upon
the Throne nnd unto the Lamb for
ever.”
