Moat of the trading scorned to be in the
way of undoing straddles dr switches,
and ah<4U the only feature was the of
fer of it.oininent spot house brokers to
sell March and buy May when the dif
ference widened to 40 points during the
early trading There consequently
seemed some disposition around the ring
to modify predictions as to the probnb:**
widening of the- difference between New
York and Liverpool. This may have
checked sealing off May and July to
some extent. and the market close.!
steady at a net decline of three to five
points.
Lower cables and rathe!* less favor
able trade advices probably accounted
for an opening decline of from three to
five points, and active months sold fix
to nitfe points net lower during the
first few minutes. There were quite a
good many buying orders, however, and
prices rallied four efr five points on
covering of shorts. Last prices were a
shade off from the best under realizing.
Private cables reported American ski
ing In Liverpool and also said that
ofloths were accumulating in Manches
ter with some of the dealers in Man
chester with some of the dealers in the
Burnley section going on short time.
March part of its early premium,
closing 35 points over May.

For Long Account.
New Orleans. -While cotton had a
downward tendency'"today, the tone was
steady and reactions were caused by
profit-taking operations on the short
side. Little buying for long account
was in evidence at any time, although
thebe were rumors that local hulls wera
planning to take up cottou on Mar£h
contracts. These rumors stimulated
short covering to some etxent.
The decline of six to eight on ths
opening was caused by disappointing ca
ttles from Liverpool. Offerings of shot
cotton were heavy enough at times to
incu'o than meet the demur T for realiz
ing purposes dnd at the low r est the mar
ket stood eight to nine points down. r t*fi#

New York. —Liverpool has the disease

In a speculative way. The New York
market has no long speculative cotton.
The speculative trade In tills city are
more Indifferent to cotton than they
have been since It win at the 8 1-4-oent
level In 1908 and they are probably just
a* badly fooled as fbey were In that
year. The remnant of the crop unmark

will take four million Imle* to spin a*

WEEK IN COTTON
New York. Announcement that the
revision committse of the New York
Cotton Exchange hud decided to make
no change In grade differences was fol
lowed hy .1 heavy general selling move
ment in the luaYKot here during the lat
ter part of the week. Judging from
opinions expressed, it w»s considered
doubtful whethei Ihe commit tee s lon
Inspired fresh bearish sentiment, or
whether relief front revision uncertain
ties hhd been the signal for litpildatlon
sod hear nressuVo on i««lk of a slacken
ing *not octnand and continued heavy
receipts.
The fact tha I all markets worked
lower led some to the latter conclusion,
while others claimed that both the fall
tire of the committee to Increase low
grade penalties and more general teat
ures hsd been factors on the decline. At
any rate, after a quiet and steady early
week, the maVket broke sharpie and ah
months, except Much, made new low
ground for the season. Sidling was ac
companied bv numerous predictions of
still whler differences between New
York and Llverpo* I, while the relative
ly firm ruling of March was explained by
h»cnl gossip on the ground that promU
pent spot Interests, heavllv short of M ly
end July hare against pnVchases abroad,
were holding M tvh with the
possible Intention of demanding delive
ries which might he re-tendered on Mav

of straddle operations.
The heavy Into-slght movement has
naturally reflected the active spot de
mand reported from the South durlgn
.Innunfx but has em uraged the larger
views of the American crop, while some
authorities abroad contend that foreign
cotton crops this season, for the first
time on record, may equal the /uneri
cun production. Such Ideas of the world’s
supply seemed to offset the more op
timistic view of general trade condition*
pi some local circles and predictions of
iowi*. prices have also been encouraged
bv continued reports of large fortlhx-*r
eales or well advanced farm work in the
eastern belt. On the other hand, there
have been many reports of stare seed
In the southwest, spot markets have not
fully followed the break, snd bullish ly
disposed traders claimed that tvade
