The department of public affairs. Dr.
Oertel, commissioner, meets at 12 noon
today and an effort will be made to
have the department of publicity. T.

p. m. This will be the last of tha
departmental meetings, or conferences
with Mr. McKeand.
Yesterday meetings were held by
the department of transportation, Paul
Mustln, commissioner; the department
of conventions and tourists, H. H.
Stafford, commissioner; tho depart
ment of business development, Roscoe
Perkins, commissioner, and the de
partment of agriculture, R. C. Berck
ma.ns, commissioner. Ttpe same high
standard of both attendance and in
terest c haracterized these meetings a»
did those of Monday. In all the phases
of work coming under the various
division heads and the general scope
of departments, Mr. McKeand'sought
to give the members the best possible
suggestions on the practices of com
mercial organizations In cities through
out the country.

ing such assistance in the big celebra
tion next week under the auspices of
the Augusta and Aiken Railway Com

ACCUSED OE SWINDLING
WITH TRADING STAMPS
Ben Thompson, a young white man
of this city Is being detained by the
police on a charge of cheating and
swindling It is sieged that he bought
up purple trading stamp books on the
pretense that the Merchants Stamp
Company was going out of business.
The books it Is said were purchased
for a sum considerably below their val
ue and that In this manner Thompson
netted enough funds from his opera
tions to make the work interesting.
The stamp company got hold of the
information of what was going on and
the police were notified. Later, as a
result of Investigation made by the
detective force, Thompson was arrest
ed. He implicated others but it was
found upon a diligent search that
Thompson was mistaken; there were
no others implicated.
The police have the names of Bes
sie Dee, 916 Fenwick street; Josephine
Sanders and Josephine Cumming, 918
Fenwick stret; Rebecca Lowe, Laura
Royal and Eva Heath, 947 Barnes j
street, and Sue Evans, 416 Fried's Al
ley, all said to he victims of the alleged
trading stamp swindle.
