Controversy Over Woman
Doctor.
Columbia, S. C.— That In a confi
dential conversation between Superin

of the Insane and Col. E. H Aull, says
a special to the Atlqjita Journal, the
night the latter was shown the letters
from Governor Rlease to Pr. Rabcock
demanding that he dismiss Dr. Saund
ers, the woman physician. Col. Aull
snld the lettera were a reflection upon
Dr. Saunders and Imprinted would de
feat Governor Please and reflect U. S.
Senator E. D. Smith Is not denied by
Col. Aull.
Babooek Insists.
Dr J. W. Babcock kept Insisting be
ttors the asylum Investigators yesterday
tMt what he Shy* was a vital part of a
confidential conversation he had with
Col. E. H. Aull, had not been told by
the latter and Col. Aull stated he did
recollect anything more than he told
However, after the committee adjourn
ed he saw Dr. Rabcock and the latter
told him w hat he meant. Col. Aull then
requested Chairman Mauldtng to per
mit him to go back on the stand this
afternoon. The committee did not get
to hear him, and tonight Col. Aull gave
out a statement concerning the matter.
He will ask the to put it In
the record. His dictated statement
follows:
"l have had a talk with Dr. Rabcock
since the adjournment of the commit
tee yesterday afternoon and he has In
formed me of what was the (vital)
thing that I said to him In connection
with the two letters of Governor Rlease
at the time I was endeavoring to with
hold the demand of Governor Rlease
for a special meeting of. the regents.
Of Vital Importance
"Inasmuch as he seemed to think
what I said was of such vital impor
tance to this Investigation. I want to
state what he says I said. I do not re
call having made the remarks, and do
not see that It Is so ‘vital’ to this In
vestigation. However, I have no desire
to withhold anything that may help to
Clanfy the situation.
"He says that I said that the state
newspaper would give a good sum for
possession of the two letters and If
they were published they would defeat
Governor Blease for the senate and
elect Smith. I do not recall the re
mark. If I said it. it would only be
an opinion and could have no connec
tion that I can see with the manage
ment of the institution.
"I do recall that 1 remarked when I
read the letters whether one of them
at least reflected upon Dr. Saunders or
It did not. The letter was unfortunate
ly worded, and I told Governor Blease
this. He said he had no Intention of
1 reflecting on Dr. Saunders.
Many Conversations.
"I have had a great many conversa
tions with Dr. Babcock during the
three years that I have been coming
to Columbia I have been his friend
and have tried to do what I could do
to serve his Interest and would not now
do him an injustice if I knew it.”
"I have asked the committee to per
mit me to make this statement because
it seemed to me that Dr. Rabcock in
the ‘grilling’ which he gave me, as
stated by one of the papers, was en
deavoring to make It appear that I
have a convenient memory. I have
nothing to conceal. What I did I
thought was in the Interest of harmony
and for the good of all concerned."
: THE BIJOU j

Rocking the Boat," "Irish Tango,' “Isle
D’Amour," "Chattanooga," On the Way

The dancing, principally the new

tiful variations, Is demonstrated In an
extremely -clever manner.

of these special added attractions that

NEGRO MUST HANG.
Atlanta, Ga.— That a recommenda

does not always mean that a condemn

shown today by the action of Gover

sentence of W. M. Duncan, a Houston
county negro, who Is sentenced to be
hanged In the Jail at Perry, and whom
the commission recommended for life
Imprisonment.
On Thanksgiving night In 1912 Dun

convinced himself that the negro de

without any provogntion that would
Justify the act or make commutation
desirable.
