Editor Wttyne Coufnfy New*:
I notice in the Inst issue of your
valued paper that a petition will be
sent to the Legislature, through the
representative of this county, to
amend the Local Option Liquor
Law now in force, by reducing the
license from ten thousand dollars
to one hundred dollars.
Now, Mr. Editor, is it possible
that there are people In this coun
ty who would bring back agun the
awful cUtsfe of barrooms, lifter the
experience of the past?
1 can rytnember the timq when
Jesup was considered one of the
worst places in'Georgia, by reason
of Us bars, and the lawlessness
which was brought about by them.
Since whiskey was driven out,
the town has improved and people
do not have the ugly things to say
about her that they once did.
Bring it back, and people will
shun it as was once the case, and
those who are moral and want a
place where they can raise their
children without a barroom staring
them in the face, will move away.
Surely those who have signed
this petition have not weighed the
results.
Reduce your license and you
open your door to the vile and de¬
praved who will crowd in to drink,
while their wives and little ones
suffer hunger.
Every one who has signed this
petition, surely have forgotten, if
they have ever heard, the words of
the Bible, “woe unto him who put*
teth the bottle to his neighbor's
lips."
God’s curse is upon the traffic,
and while men may seem to pros¬
per who engage in its sale, sooner
or later they will feel the awful
blight of its influence.
The argument is made that we
have “blind tigers,” which are
worse than the open barr >oma.
This I deny; while a tiger blind,
is bad enough, one or more loose is
worse,
l will have more to say about this
matter in another issne.
I trust that the people of this
county who fear God and have the
best interest of the common peo
pie at heart, will rise up in their
might and demand that the license
remuin as it is.
