SOl.D ILLICIT OLEOMARGARINE.
Proprietor cf Fake Butter Factory
Fined $10,0C0 and Given Six Months.
Having pleaded guilty to operating
an illicit oleomargarine factory, Al¬
bert T. Dow, proprietor of the Fertile
VaHey Creamery Company, in Chica¬
go, was fined $10,000 and sentenced
to six months in the county jail by
Judge Kholsaat, in the federal court
Monday,
Dow is said to have cheated the gov¬
ernment out of $40,000 in revenue,
. payment of which he evaded. This is
said to be the heaviest fme ever im¬
posed in a federal court.

Madrid Papers Make Flippant Fling,
at Buffalo Exposition.
The Macrid newspapers have begun
a campaign against the Pan-American
exposition now on at Buffalo.
They say that the exposition is de¬
signed to undermine Spanish institu¬
tions in South America and prepare the
way for “yankeeizing” the entire con¬
tinent. They urge that the South
American republics should boycott the
exposition instead cf supporting it

to Savannah—Bonds are Given.
judge Brown, of the United States
district court at New York, signed
an order Thursday for the removal of
Captain Benjamin D. Green, John F.,
Edward H„ and Wiliiam T. Gaynor
to Savannah, Ga., for trial on charges
of conspiracy with O. M. Carter. Cap¬
tain Green and John F. Gaynor were
held in $25,000 bail each and E. H.
and William T. Gaynor in $10,000.
James B. Leary furnished bond for
Captain Green and William B. Kirk
furnished bond for John F. and Wil¬
liam T. Gaynor.

Guided By Constitutional Law.
Politics rather than constitutional
law appears to be the basis for Mon
day’s remarkable decision of the su¬
preme court in the insular eases. By
a vote of 5 to 4, the court decides to
uphold the constitutionality of the For
aker act.
In administration circles there is
great rejoicing that the administration
has been sustained even if the result
was reached by a narrow margin and
declared by one of the closest opinions
over delivered from the supreme
bench.
STOP HAZING OR CLOSE.
Congressman Landis Makes Dire
Threats Against Military Academy.
Congressman Charles B. Landis, of
the thirtieth Indiana district, a West
Point visitor, is reported as saying
that if the hazing evil at West Point
could not be suppressed the military
academy would be closed for three or
four years.
“Congress is in a humor to do just
such a thing,” said Mr. Landis.
BIG VOLCANO BREAKS LOOSE.
Java Coffee Plantations Threatened
and People Flee for Their Lives.
Advices from Batavia, Java, state
that the volcano of Keloet is in erup¬
tion. The lava is threatening the BH
tar coffee plantations and has endan¬
gered Kediri. The district is in total
darkness.
It was reported that there had been
great loss of life, many natives hav¬
ing been overwhelmed with lava. The
population of Biltar is fleeing.

Presbyterian Assembly at Philadel¬
phia Vote Important Concessions.
Creed revision to satisfy conscien¬
tious office holders, ministers, elders
and deacons, who are disturbed by
some of the doctrines and certain
phrases in some of the chapters of the
Westminster confession of faith, and
a new doctrinal statement of the re¬
formed faith for the million members
in the church not office holders, who
wish to know what the church be
lieves without studying the confession
of faith—these concessions were made

WATERWORKS' FOR CHARLESTON
Ce-,tract For Building Plant Awarded
to a Philadelphia Firm.
At a meeting of the Charleston, S.
C., city counen Friday night a con¬
tract was authorized between the
Charleston Light and Water Company,
acting for the city, and the American
Pipe Manufacturing company, of
Philadelphia, for a new water supply
system for Charleston, which shall
provide 5,000,000 gallons daily. Water
for the new system will be pumped
from Goose creek, a distance of eleven
miles.

Will Be Leased to Government In Pur¬

A special meeting of the Florida
state board of health was held in Tal¬
lahassee Tuesday for the purpose of
considering a proposal submitted to
the board from the United States trea¬
sury department through the marine
hospital service to turn over the mari¬
time quarantine service to the state
and lease all quarantine stations to
tie government as authority through
a joint resolution of the legislature
S KILLED IN PRISON CELL.
j Man Detained In Memphis Police Sta¬
tion Slain By Fellow Prisoner.
Alexander Peden, a well known citi¬
zen of Pulaski, Tenn., was murdered
Monday night in a cell of detention at
the police station, and N. A, Giilis, of
Cumby, Hopkins county, Texas, is un¬
der arrest charged with the killing.
Peden had been arrested for safe
keeping, having imbibed too freely
during the afternoon. Giilis was also
arrested for the same cause and put
in a cell with Peden.
BOTTLE TELLS TALE.
Steamer Croft Goes Down In Mid
Ocean and All on Board Lost.
A London special says: A bottle,
which was picked up at Granton Fri¬
day, contained a message saying that
the steamer Croft, with ali hands, was
sinking In the mid-Atlantic,
The British steamer Croft, of the Ar
row line, laden with grain and gener
al merchandise, sailed from New York
January 25, 1899, for Leith and Dun
dee, with a crew of twenty-five men,
j and was never heard of. She ha3 long
since been posted as missing at
Lloyd’s.
CONTRACT FOR NEW ROAD.
Macon, Dublin and Savannah Line
Will Soon Be Completed.
The contract was let Monday night
in Macon, Ga., for the grading of the
extension of the Macon, Dublin and
Savannah road from Dublin to Viila
lia, in Montgomery county, a distance
of about forty miles, to W. J. Oliver &
Co., of Indiana, whose present head¬
quarters are in Langley, S. C. It is
expected the work will be completed
within three months.
REDEEMED IN ADVANCE.
Town of Carrollton, Ga., Takes Up
School Bond Due In 1912.
The municipal authorities of Carroll¬
ton, Ga., have paid a public school
bond due in 1932 and paid the pre¬
mium thereon. This money was on
hand in the sinking fund and could be
applied to nothing else. Four years
ago Carrollton issued bonds to build
he present $16,000 school building and
this is the first bond redeemed. The
city saved $460 by taking up this cou¬
ncil.

Trio of Young Nimrods Have Some Se¬
rious Fun in Alabama.
Oscar and Webb Winn and Ollie
Robbins, three young white men un¬
der twenty-one years of age, are in
the county jail at Birmingham, Ala.,
the charge against them being the
murder of William Knaves, a very
worthy colored man residing near
Robbins, where he was assassinated
and where the young men also reside.
It is charged that the young men
deliberately took shots at the negro as
he was passing along the highway, re¬
marking one of them: “Let us see
him hop.”
Fighting the Platt Amendment.
Jaan Gualberto continued his
speech against the Platt amendment
before the Cuban constitutional con¬
vention at Havana Thursday. Senor
Sanguilly replied to him. The conven¬
tion adjourned for the day without
voting.
Must Hasten Trials.
General Wood at Havana issued or¬
ders Thursday to the judges and post
office inspectors that all cases must
immediately be brought to trial, begin¬
ning not later than the middle of next
June,
