Claim New Fungi Will Stve the
government experiments
San Jose Scale Will Be Eradicated From
the Orchards pf Georgia By the
Use of New Fungi.
Fort Valley, Ga.—The heretofore
unconquerable foe and drawback to
the successful cultivation of orchards
is being rapidly wiped out, and in a
short time San Jose scale will be
entirely eradicated from the orchards
of Georgia and other fruit-producing
3tates by the use of a combination
in parasitis fungi which is being de¬
veloped, cultured and applied under a
new process.
A great amount of experimental
work has been carried on by the gov¬
this ernment line, at w'ith experiment stations along
the result that the dis¬
covery has been made that by com¬
bining several parasitic fungi to be
found in Florida with a new species
of fungi recently discovered in South
America, and cultivating them under
a new process, perfect results are ob¬
tained in the complete eradication of
this, the most pestiferous foe that the
orchardists of this section have ever
had to contend with.
Heretofore the orchardfsts were
compelled to whitewash their trees
once or twice a year, as well as spray
them with some strong mixture at
least annually and frequently oftener,
in order to curtail the ravages of this
pest, yet each succeeding year the
Scale would begin its devastating
work again.
Some were apprehensive lest the
introduction of this fungi into orch¬
ards might produce a disease of the
trees or attack the fruit, but a thor¬
ough investigation by the experiment
station in Florida demonstrates con¬
clusively that no such danger need
be anticipated from this scale destroy¬
ing fungi, for as soon as these fungi
have destroyed the scale insects and
other pests upon which they live, there
being nothing more for them to feed
upon, they perish.
When Hrst discovered, these luiigi
were applied by tying a stick which
contained it to every fifth tree in
every fifth row, and then only in
warm weather—by this method sev¬
eral months would elapso before It
had spread sufficiently to encompass
an orchard. 1.1 y the new process of
application, the swish of a whisk
broom containing the fungi on each
tree is all that Is necessary, and
from four to six weeks will find the
orchard thus treated absolutely free
from all scales.
WILL DSL PRISON LABOR.
Tuberculosis Hospital and Reformato
ry Will Be Erected by Convicts.
Atlanta, Ga.—Chairman Rtife Hutch¬
ens and Commissioner Wiley Wil¬
liams of the prison commission are
both at the prison farm near Milledge
ville, perfecting ilia plans tor the
erection of a tuberculosis hospital
and a reformatory building in the
near future. The contract for the re¬
formatory has already been let to an
Atlanta firm of contractors and the
building is to be completed by March
first.
Hereafter, the commission is going
to adopt a new rule in the erection
of buildings, whereby the state will
be saved about 50 per cent in their
cost, according to Chairman Hutch¬
ens. Mr. Hutchens .found, upon In¬
vestigation, that there are enough
skilled carpenters and mechanics in¬
carcerated in the penitentiary to do
all the building work needed.
He will ask that the various coun¬
ties in which these skilled laborers
are doing road work exchange them
with the commission or give them up.
In that way he expects to organize a
corps of about ten skilled workers.
The services of a Cedartown contrac¬
tor have been secured to devise and
superintend the building work, A
foreman will be employed to over
look the workers. All the actual la
bor will be done by convicts.

FARMERS FIGHT U. S. RULE RANGE.
North Georgians Claim Soldiers Kill
Their Cattle.
Ringgold, Ga.—Hearing on the con¬
demnation proceedings of Catoosa
county lands for the war department,
which came up in the federal court at
Atlanta, was continued until February
19, and, according to the provision
tie citation, both counsel and land
owners must appear at that time.
The lands wanted are near Catoosa
Springs, and will be used lor enlarge
ment of the ride range, located east
of this place.
An injunction was secured against
the commander at Foit Oglethorpe
garrison and tl-e authorities of the
war department, restraining them
from using the rifie range for target
practice.
The hearing, as above stated, will
open a case that will result in the
acquisition of about 752 acres of land,
in addition to an already exceptional¬
ly large tract of land.
The appointment of Mrs. Susie M.
Atkinson, widow of the late Governor
William Yates Atkinson to succeed
herself as postmaster at Newnan,
has been confirmed by the senate.

agonizing pain; uncovering his knees gave him a dream of traveling in a

“LITTLE NEMO” COMING.
Klaw and Erlangor’a Gigantic Production
Will be in Atlanta for One Week.
Atlanta, Ga.—The biggest show that
has ever been brought to Atlanta,
Klaw and Krlanger's gigantic produc¬
tion of "Little Nemo,” will be seen
at the Grand for a week, beginning
February Hist.
The entertainment, which is de¬
scribed as the most elaborate musi¬
cal comedy that has ever been pre¬
sented in the world, is said to be the
greatest sensation in theatricals for
years, and in New York, Boston and
Chicago, the only cities that witness¬
ed it last season, the playhouses in
which it was hooked were not large
enough to hold the crowds that it at¬
tracted.
The newspapers in .the cities It
has been seen In ail united in declar¬
ing it the most wonderful and inter¬
esting production that has ever been
staged in America. So great is its
scope, so immense its organization
and scenic equipment, that it will only
be played in the larger cities through¬
out the country. The great company
exploiting "Little Nemo’’ numbers
over 150 performers. There are
armies of most beautiful girls, with
specialties and novelties heretofore
unknown to the stage, the whole
forming an entertainment of l'un and
splendor that has never been equaled.
The music has been composed by the
greatest of American composers, Vic¬
tor Herbert, and the book, which is
based on the world-famous cartoons
of VVinsor McCay, in the New York
Herald, is the work of Harry B.
Bnilth. The original cast includes .Jo¬
seph Cawthorn, llarry Kelly, Harry
Clay Blaney, Master Gabriel, Natalie
Alto, Aimes lihrlich, Maud Campbell,
Madelyn Marshall and Queenie Vas
ear.

occurring on their lines respectively
during the preceding month on forms
to be supplied by tbe commission.
Back at his desk after a week’s
absence in Washington, where ha at¬
tended the conference of governors,
and in New York, Uovernor Brown
expeots to inaugurate a movement in
tho near Kiture to bring the 1911 con¬
ference of governors to Georgia. 'The
suggestion made by Governor
Hughes of New York, that the gov¬
ernors, Instead of meeting at the na¬
tional capital, should meet at the
capitals of their various states, met
with general approval and the next
conference, which will be held in De¬
cember, 1911 , will meet In Atlatna,
if Governor Brown and the people of
Atlanta and Georgia, can succeed in
getting it.
Americus will be the mecca for
the representative farmers of the en¬
tire third congressional district early
in February, when a campaign of ed¬
ucation and information upon gener
el topics agricultural will be conduct¬
ed here by representative speakers
from the State college at Athens.
February 10tb, 11th, and 12th are the
dates already selected.
' Captain W. F. Smith,
who is build¬
ing tho railroad line from Indian
Springs to Jackson, announces that
the line will be completed and In op¬
eration by the first of August. 'The
road will operate gasoline cars, it is
said, an experiment new in this sec¬
tion, but said to be highly efficient
and satisfactory where the plan has
been tried. The line will be five miles
long.
The Georgia Agricultural college
has settled upon Milledgeville as the
point where the demonstration meet¬
ing for the Sixth congressional dis¬
trict Will be held. It will be held
February 21, 22, 23.
Bibb county representatives in the
state legislature will be asked by the
county commissioners to introduce a
bill at the coming session setting at
11,000 the state license upon all deal¬
er* who carry for sale ammunition
suitable for the discarded army guns
and rifles tnat are now being sold for
more songs throughout the state. It
is believed that the sale of these
weapons to irresponsible persons is a
most dangerous practice and about
the only way to put a stop to it is to
make a high license.
Orders have been received at Fort
Oglethorpe, Chickamattga, according
to a press dispatch from Chattanoo¬
ga, to the effect that the national
guard of Tennessee, Georgia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi,
and Alabama will participate in the
military maneuvers to be held there
the coming summer.
If reports from well-informed par¬
ties in various parts of Ware county
are to be believed, there will be a
larger acreage in cotton in this coun¬
ty in 1910 tnan last year. However,
it is said that tbe farmers intend
paying more attention to the growing
of grains than heretofore.
