"Dumpy, remove that helmet.”
"Das Hell mitt? Das Hell mitt

WiTH A KNIFE.
One of the commonest feats with
the jack-knife is to cut a chain out
of a single piece of wood, says the
Rosary Magazine. This is not diffi¬
cult and forms therefore an excellent
design with which to begin.
in making the chain a piece of
wood is first trimmed into the form
of a cylinder or roller, perhaps an
inch in -diameter and as long as the
chain Is to be—six or eight inches
will do very well
In this eyiinder four deep, long fur¬
rows are then cut in such a way that
the end of the block, instead of being
round, now looks like a cross with
four equal arms, each arm being the
end of a long rib that extends length¬
wise along the black.
The next step Is to cut notches in
the ribs at equal distances from each
other and in such a way that in each
rib the notches shall correspond ex¬
actly to those of the opposite rib,
while in two other ribs the notches
alternate with these.
The position and general form of
the links in the chain should now bo
apparent and one may begin to hol¬
low out the Inside of them To do
this a hole should be cut through one
of the still solid links. As soon as
these links are loose they can be
rapidly rounded and smoothed as well
as trimmed as slender as may be de
sired
Another design, which is scarcely
more difficult than the chain, Is the
bail in a cage. This Is whittled out
of a single block of wood—Newark
