A Deliberate Effort to Wreck a
Passenger Train.
A diabolic attempt was made to
wreck the Alabama Great Southern
near Boligee. Ala. Sunday night.
Plie would-be wreckers placed a large
piece ot bridge timber about fifteen
inches square and thiee feet lohg be
tween the crossties, at the south end of
the Tombigbee trestle. The train was
riming about thirty miles an hour
when the engine struck the obstruc
tion. The engineer applied the air
brakes and reversed the engine when
it struck the timber, and no damage
was done except to the pilot, which
was almost demolished. It is a mira
cle that the train did not leave the
tiack and plunge down the embank
ment.

It seems that the interest of educa
tion is at a low, ebb, in this county,
here at St. Mary’s Academy, and there
iv only a small primary school here,
and it is poorly attended when we
have enough children to furnish a
school of sixty-five or seventy scholars.
We have plenty of material in our
county for a. State Benat,.r for the
Forty-fomth district, and the outlook
is promising for plenty of candidates,
the friends of the following named
gentlemen are urging their claims;
Hon. .J. B. Wheeler, Hon. J. T,
Wood, Col. R. M. W. Glenn, Col. J.
